Chapter 8

Cruz

We only have one week left of school holidays and there's a small sense of nerves inside of me. I've been in the same school for years, but I still seem to get scared when I have to go back after a long holiday. Brightwave High. It's a big British school. The reason why I say 'British School' is because it's rough. The competition is real, and if you disagree you are 100% asking for a fight. I still love it there though. The music program is excellent.

I'm sitting downstairs in the kitchen. Our kitchen is big. My mom loves to cook. I look down at the salad sitting in front of me and swirl it around with my fork. My mom is talking to my dad about work and Wilbur is kicking my leg under the table. I look at him and he looks at me. He pulls a face that makes him look like a beaver and I start laughing. He joins in and soon we are both in tears with laughter. "Boys. What's so funny?" my mom says in her serious voice. This only makes us laugh harder. "Leave them, Angie. We won't understand them anyway." My dad says while looking at her. My brother and I will laugh at the dumbest things...

After dinner, I go upstairs and back to my bedroom. I flop down on my unmade bed and grab my phone from my pocket.

Jack: Hey C. Wanted to ask if you are busy...

This is Jack. My best friend. We have known each other since year 5 and are like brothers. He's a head shorter than my long 6,2 body. We met in an English class when the teacher paired us up for an assignment. Since then, we have had each other's backs. He looks a lot like a nerd with his big black glasses that cover most of his pale face and ginger hair.

Hey J. Nope not busy... wanna call?

Jake: Yeps.

I press the call icon and wait. After two rings he answers. "Hey, Cruz. What's up?" he says. He sounds far away from the phone. "Hey, Jake Sparrow. I'm good. What about you?" There's a long silence. "I'm ok man. Just wanted to call and see if you have any plans tomorrow." He says with his normal geek voice. "Nuh, I don't have plans. Bean Street tomorrow at 12 am?" I ask even though I really don't feel like going anywhere. Bean Street is the local hangout in this town. "Yeah, sure. See you tomorrow then. Bye C." he says quickly and ends the call before I can say goodbye.

I shove my pillow in my face and groan into it. Somebody knocks on my door. "Come in," I shout even though it sounds muffled through a big pillow. I look up and see my brother standing in the doorway. "Hey Cruzship. Can I come chill here for a bit?" he asks with a grin on his face. "Sure," I say while getting up and walking over to my desk. He walks straight to my bed and dives into the unmade sheets. He looks up at me with his blond hair all messy and static from the fabric. "You look tired Cruz," he says softly. "Yeah, 'cause I am... but we can still do something if you want, Wil." His big blue eyes look straight into mine. "Movie?" he asks while scooting to make room for me on my bed. After I grab my laptop, I walk over to the bed and flop next to him. "What do you wanna watch?" I ask while opening my laptop. "You choose big B." I look through the movies I have saved and put on Jurassic Park, his favourite movie. He scoots closer to me and rests his head on my shoulder. The movie starts and I close my eyes. Bright blues and greens surround us.
