I sit in a tight ball in my cell. 3 words run over and over in my head.
Crystal is dead.
The door to my cell slides open and the Inquisitor walks in. "Hello Padawan."
I raise my head. "What do you want?" I ask softly.
"Many things. To kill you, to kill your Master..." He steps closer. "But I wonder if you are already dead. You are usually so fighting, so... Persistent. But you allowed yourself to be thrown in here, to be kept a prisoner. Usually you have already escaped our grasp by now."
"Why am I still alive? You could have killed me." I sit up.
"Because you are worth plenty to me... And to my Master, but you are only worth something alive. Although it would be a pleasure to kill you right now, my Master and I need you alive."
"Why?" I ask.
"You will find out." The Inquisitor reaches out with the Force and touches my mind. "The girl is dead. Does it matter to you? Did SHE matter to you?"
I glare at him. "You killed her. And someday, you will pay for that. With your life."
"Good. I can sense your anger and pain. Let me add to it: Were you wondering how we knew where you and your rebel friends were? Who told us? We had a tracking device in Crystal's Imperial Cadet uniform. In all of the advanced classes uniforms, actually. Crystal's acceptance tests told us that she was a skilled mechanic, she would have known about the tracker and could have turned it off. But she didn't."
His words slowly sink in. Crystal, in a twisted sort of way, had been a traitor.I closed my eyes. I had kissed a traitor!
Had it all been a game to her? Or had she felt anything at all?
"Oh, she cared for you alright. In the end, she sacrificed herself for you. She felt guilty. She tried to make it right." The Inquisitor pulled at my thoughts, and I didn't try to stop him.
"I don't believe it. Crystal.... She couldn't have. I let myself be fooled!" I bury my head in my hands.
The Inquisitor uses the Force to pull me up into the air in front of him. "Let me go!"
"Did you love her, Padawan? Does her betrayal sting? Was she someone that you cared for?" He inquires. "Who was she to you, Ezra Bridger?"
My name. Hearing him say it clears my thoughts and panic shoots through me.
"How'd you find out my name?" I ask, terrified. Did he know about my parents? If they were dead... Or still alive?
"She said it. She told you goodbye, and said your name." Tears sting at my eyes and threaten to spill over. It overwhelms me, too many emotions to conquer and hide. I slump to the ground, seeing only black.
