What We Once Were

Part 1

End of Sophomore year...

Two and half years I have been in love with my best friend. Two years ago everything changed with a simple kiss. Now everything seemed perfect to me.

The final bell rang snapping me out of my thoughts. "Hey Lex," Tobin said putting her arm around my waist like usual. I loved this routine we had. Tobin would wait outside for me in my afternoon classes and walk me to my bus stop. The thing I loved most was the feeling I would get from Tobin putting her arm around me, now that could never get old.

"Hey Toby," I said giving her a quick peck on the cheek. Tobin blushed every time we had little moments like that. We walked to the bus loading zone and waited for my bus to come. Tobin could drive but her mom wouldn't let anyone in the car with her. She moved her hand down to mine and intertwined our fingers together.

"What are you doing tonight?" She whispered in my ear. I felt chills rush down my spine.

"Probably watch Netflix for the night and maybe if I feel nice enough invite you over," I teased poking her in the stomach. She smiled and took my grief.

"Well I wanted to take you out on a date buttttt," she trailed off "Netflix sounds tempting too."

"Noooo let's go out and celebrate the end of this year, I mean when's the last time we had a date with just the two of us?" Tobin had to think a moment before she responded.

"You're going to miss your bus if you don't go right now," she teased, "fine we'll go out but I'll text you with details later now go before you miss it for real." She said giving me a quick hug.

"Alright I love you-" I let that slip out of my mouth. Tobin's eyes went wide with the confession. As long as we've been together we've never said I love you. I turned and ran to my bus without looking back. My heart was beating so fast and my hands started shaking.

"You okay there Al?" Kelley asked me.

"I just told Tobin I love her by accident," I said and Kelley busted out laughing.

"It's about damn time one of you said it. Why are you shaking? This is a good thing." She was getting excited.

"No it's not! She looked so freaked out when I said it. What if I messed open Kell?"

"Alex do you trust me?" She asked.

"Yeah of course," I said without a second thought.

"She loves you too, so don't worry about anything." She patted my arm and put her headphones in.

I felt my phone buzz in my lap and seen it was from Tobin.

Tobin: Dress causal it's nothing fancy I promise and I'll see you at 6:30 because I know you take forever to get ready;)

Me: You're so mean but I guess I'll see you soon;)

Tobin: Great see you soon!

I locked my phone and sighed. The bus came to a stop I checked and seen I had almost two hours to get ready.

The doorbell rang and I ran down the stairs like my life depended on it. I opened the door to see Tobin hiding behind a bouquet of white tulips and jasmine. She's so adorable I can't even handle it.

She moved her head from behind the flowers and gave me a blinding smile." Hey beautiful," she greeted and gave me a quick peck on the lips.

"You're ready I hope, I mean I did give you enough time to get ready right?" she teased me.

"Of course I am retard, but let me put these beautiful flowers in vase before we leave," I said walking into the kitchen. I was just about to put the flowers in the water when I felt Tobin's arm snake around my waist and pulled me into her. My breath hitched when I felt her breath against my neck. She planted a kiss on my neck then one on my check and one of the corner of my mouth.

"I like your shirt," she whispered against my lips. I turned to face her and wrapped her arms around her waist. I took in her appearance and chuckled a bit. Her black short and her favorite grey Nike tank top with her light blue button up over it. And of course she can't forget the snapback.

"I know you do because I stole it from you," I said closing the space between our lips. Before things got too heated Tobin pulled away.

"We got to go now if we're going to make it," she said grabbing my had to lead me out to her Jeep.

"Perry let you take the Jeep?" I asked surprise.

"Well yeah tonight's going to be awesome!" She said pulling out of my driveway. She wrapped her hand with mine and smiled. I wonder if she forgot I told her I loved her.

After twenty minutes of driving we finally came to a stop. I recognized where we were and got out of the Jeep. "What does the oh so famous Tobin Heath have planned for us on Diamond Bars famous lookout point?"

"Well I guess the nosey Alex Morgan will find out soon, that is if she's patient enough. For all know you're going to sprint up this hill." She said grabbing a picnic basket out of the backseat.

"Why do you always got to be so mean to me?" I pouted.

"Because it's fun and you're Alex so it's easy to." I whacked her in the arm and we set off up the hill.

When we got to the top I seen a blanket already set up.

"How?" I began to ask.

"Katie," she interrupted.

"You Ms. Heath are a big sap when it come to dates," I said sitting down beside her .

"Yeah but deep down you love it," she smiled and started to unload the basket. There was that word again.

I reached out and touched her arm gently. "Tobin about earlier today I didn't mean to freak you out or anything I just-"

"Lex,"she began to say.

"It kind of just slipped out and-" She pressed her lips against mine and I lost track of what I was going to say.

She pulled away and looked into my eyes. "Are you done rambling?" She asked. I nodded my head and she smirked. "Good it's cute but you never let me finish what I was trying to say. I love you too Alex, I always figured I would say it first but you caught me off guard."

"Wow we are two of the most oblivious people in the universe," I laughed and Tobin laughed with me.

It seemed like only a few minutes had gone by up there, but that turned out to be hours. I checked my phone and seen it was almost nine.

"Tobs we have to go soon or my mom will flip out." I started to stand up but she pulled me back down.

"There's something I need to tell you," She said and I could tell she was nervous about it. She took a deep breath and her eyes started to water. "I'm moving Lex."

I felt like the wind got knocked out of me and could feel my heart start to beat faster . "When?" I asked completely defeated.

"Middle of July.... My dad got a job in Washington.I found out earlier this month." I pursed my lips not knowing what to say.
"Then I guess we only have a month and a half to spend together in person," Hope started to fill her eyes.

"What about when I leave?" She asked.
"When it comes time to that we will deal with it, but for now let's enjoy all of this. I love you Tobin and I hope I always will." She kissed me one more time and relaxed.
