LOCATION: The SubwayCarlos paced the platform anxiously- he should have done something, he should have been able to protect them.
"Carlos- could you cut that shit out?!" Tyrell exclaimed as the other U.B.C.S Officer went about confirming that all parts of the train were now fictional-
Carlos had been on track clearing duty as the chaos in the city above had created a big mess in the tunnels below
"What if they're dead?" Carlos asked as he hoisted some rubble that was blocking the tracks into a neat pile-
He heard Nikolai who was suddenly lurking nearby laugh at Carlos's question- Carlos decided to actively ignore him.
Tyrell rolled his eyes, Carlos had only known Jill for a couple of hours and her was already smitten
"Carlos she's with the Black Widow, I'm sure they're both fine" Tyrell attempted to reassure him.
The two women had lured the creature that was attacking the subway away from here- not that Tyrell wasn't grateful, he also hoped that the two women were ok,
"Come on man- you should have seen the thing, it wasn't a Zombie and if that thing made it down here it would have killed everyone" Carlos explained as Nikolai obnoxiously laughed again,
It was getting harder for Carlos to ignore- he'd immediately assumed that the Russian man disliked the Black Widow because of the controversy that surrounded the Avengers after the destruction of Sokovia, but Jill hadn't done anything other than trying to help.
"Problem Nikolai?" Carlos asked him, only for the Russian to shrug and walk away- Carlos wondered what the silver haired Russian had actually been doing, every time Carlos glanced the man seemed to disappear from the area, almost as if he kept sneaking off to do something else.
Carlos busied himself with getting that tracks cleared- the sooner the civilians were safe the better he would feel,
He wondered what would become of them when they evacuated the city, as far as he knew every attempt to contact the company had been met with complete silence- he supposed that was Mikhail's concern, Carlos would follow his Captains orders.
"The trains systems are all up and running!" Tyrell yelled to Carlos in the tunnel, Carlos mantled back up to the platform when he heard his comms crackle to life,
"Carlos can you hear us now?" The Black Widow's voice flared through in a mess of static- but it was definitely her.
Relief immediately flooded through Carlos, Tyrell smirked at him, maybe now he would stop acting like he had a stick up his ass
"Romanoff, Jill, Thank God! Is everything ok?" Carlos asked
"Yeah, we're alive, we lost him" the Black Widow informed him,
Carlos immediately became aware that Mikhail had exited the train car and listened intently to his conversation with the Avenger,
"Great the Subway is ready to go, we'll leave as soon as you both make it back" he sighed in relief whist Tyrell looked smug,
"See I told you they were fine" Carlos nodded, he hoped that where ever they had got to that they weren't too far away,
But Mikhail had assured him that they wouldn't be leaving without them,
"Must have made your day Carlos when you first saw the Black Widow" Tyrell teased- he was the only one in their Platoon that knew of his action figure collection- a piece of blackmail material that Tyrell consistently held over Carlos.
Carlos nodded his head "Yeah- it was quite something. She's even more beautiful than the posters" he grinned, Carlos had only seen the red headed Avenger in the news footage and in the papers, but meeting her in real life was quite an unexpected experience.
"No, no, no Carlos don't even go there" Mikhail laughed- probably for the first time since they'd entered Raccoon City-
"You can have your little crush on Ms Valentine, but trust me boy don't attempt to start something with the Black Widow- she's a woman true to the nature of her name" Mikhail shook his head, but it wasn't something that had crossed Carlos's mind, but now he was curious.
He shared a silent look with Tyrell "Never crossed my mind sir, but what do you mean about that?"
Mikhail shook his head- the Black Widows story was her own and he doubted she would appreciate him sharing what he knew about her.
However before Mikhail can elaborate Nikolai suddenly made an appearance again and charges his way into the conversation
"What he means is that the Black Widow is a treacherous whore" everyone went silent, Carlos swore you could have heard a pin drop
"Uncalled for Nikolai" Mikhail warned the other Russian man-
The Black Widow wasn't perfect and she had a dark past, but Natasha Romanoff had crafted the Black Widow into something more than an assassin and because of that the very least she deserved was their respect,
"You know what I know about Romanoff. Do you actually trust her" Nikolai was testing Mikhail's patience,
The Delta Platoon Captain didn't have to take Zinoviev into his Platoon- in fact ever since he did Delta Platoon had suffered misfortune after misfortune.
Besides that, Mikhail quickly noticed that Nikolai kept disappearing- Mikhail at first had shrugged it off as the other man preferring to work the objective city on his own, however out of all the officers here- Nikolai contributed next to nothing on getting the Subway up and running again.
At the moment Mikhail had no evidence to link Nikolai to the series of unfortunate events, but Zinoviev was walking on thin ice.
Carlos decided to follow Tyrell's example and start looking busy anything to avoid the toxic atmosphere between the two Russians,
"I do trust that she wants to help rescue people- that is our mission here Nikolai" Mikhail felt the need to remind him of that- so far he wasn't entirely sure what the other Russian man had been doing so far, but he was adamant to find out.
"That's a mistake Mikhail- I'm sure that Colonel Vladimir would agree" Nikolai smirked, he knew that he was correct the U.B.C.S founder had some sort of personal vendetta against the Black Widow- as did a lot of former Soviet ex-KGB officers.
Mikhail never thought to question it before as he tended to not question anything else he knew about Umbrella.
"Carlos its Jill do you read me?" Jill's voice suddenly came through Carlos's comms she sounded a little troubled
"Loud and Clear, are you two alright?" He glanced towards the other men on his team to find that they were all looking at him
"Yeah, bastards dead" Jill stated, Carlos was amazed that the two women had managed to take down that creature-
From the brief glimpses that he'd caught of that monster it seemed relentless and angry- but of course Jill was 'Super Cop' and well- Natasha Romanoff was the Black Widow need he say no more,
"Good fuck him. What were you two thinking turning yourselves into bait? You both could have been killed!"
The thought of something horrible happening to either of them upset him a lot 'Come on man what's gotten into you'
Carlos shook his head as the Black Widow laughed over the comms- her laugh wasn't something sweet or present, it sent a shiver up Carlos's spine,
"I'll have you know that I'm well prone to destructive tendencies, I don't know what Jill's excuse is" Black Widow found the idea of dying at the hands of a freak made in an Umbrella lab to be amusing- if only they knew the things she'd face before.
Carlos heard Nikolai whisper something that he couldn't make out, but it earned the Russian a sharp glare from the Captain
"Don't either of you start, I did what I had to" Jill stated, Carlos sighed- she was beautiful and brave Carlos couldn't remember the last time he'd felt so attracted towards a woman, but Jill Valentine was certainly something special,
"I know and Thanks" Carlos shook the soft thoughts out of his head- he needed to concentrate on his job.
Tyrell smirked at Carlos, he'd never seen his U.B.C.S brother so smitten it was good- not everything had to be so bleak and dark, even if the world was ending.
"The subway is ready to go, hurry back" Carlos continued to tell them
"The Black Widow isn't coming with us, she's staying in Raccoon City, says she has a mission to complete" Jill suddenly stares through the comms, a statement which earned a reaction from all the U.B.C.S Officers,
Carlos was confused- he'd assumed that the Black Widow had been in Raccoon City on a mission, but what kind of mission warranted staying in this hell?
Tyrell wished her luck with whatever it was-
Nikolai had gone tense at the mention of it, whatever crusade the Black Widow was on it wasn't going to be good for him.
Only Mikhail seemed pleased at the news that the Black Widow was remaining in the City
"Carlos tell Ms Romanoff that when she gets back I'd to talk to her. I believe our goals may be similar" Carlos nodded not Questioning his Captain he relayed the message
"Ms Romanoff, Mikhail says that he would like a word with you when you get back to the subway, something about our goals being similar"
Tyrell glanced at Mikhail- as far as he knew their mission in Raccoon City had been to rescue civilians, but now that had seemingly changed
"Understood Carlos. Tell Mikhail that we'll talk" Carlos looked at his Captain who nodded with satisfaction, something had changed that apparently none of them knew anything about
"What do you mean Captain? Why would U.B.C.S's mission in the city have any connection to the Black Widow?" Nikolai is surprisingly the first to show concern- only it wasn't for the same reasons that the others were concerned.
Mikhail painfully sat down on one of the benches- Carlos had tried his best to administer first aid, but there was a reason he was their Platoon's Procurer and not the medic
"Think about it comrade- the Black Widow sought out Ms Valentine for a reason- there's only one cause that an Avenger would stay in this shit show" both Carlos and Tyrell felt like there was something that they were missing.
Nikolai seemed to visibly tense up further as he realised why Romanoff had come to the city and what her mission was- and it completely in opposition to his own objective,
Nikolai knew that he needed to do something about her- the Black Widow isn't someone that you could go head to head with
"If you should ever encounter the Black Widow take my advice and do not under any circumstances underestimate her" those were the only words of advice that Colonel Vladimir had issued to Umbrella's internal espionage Unit.
"Captain what are your orders?" Tyrell asked like the good U.B.C.S Officer that he was
"There's an Umbrella Scientist stationed in the City dedicated to vaccine research- it is hoped that his Vaccine Research could cure the Virus that created the Zombies"
Mikhail knew that he had to be cautious as to what he revealed about Dr Bard- the younger officers were still unknown to Umbrella's real motives and right now Mikhail preferred to keep it that way
"Carlos, Tyrell I'm sorry to ask this of you, but this could be a matter of stopping this nightmare once and for all. I need you both to remain in the city with the Black Widow- you are to both assist her in tracking down this scientist"
It wasn't ideal to remain in the City, but if it meant saving it then staying behind was perfectly fine with Carlos
"Yes sir" Carlos stated, "Understood" Tyrell added, but Mikhail concentrated on Nikolai who he suspected knew more than he was willing to let on,
"Nikolai you will be getting aboard the subway with me- our mission is still to rescue the civilians" Mikhail instructed- this made Nikolai furious,
"Captain I must insist I stay- you're leaving these boys to deal with someone that they are in no way qualified to deal with- no offence" Carlos and Tyrell shared a confused look,
The Russian man spoke of a completely different Black Widow than the one Carlos had met- and genuinely liked.
Mikhail laughed "Nikolai- theses 'boys' won't need to 'deal' with the Black Widow- because our objectives are the same, god knows we owe it to this City to try and save it"
It was the likes of Umbrella that had doomed this city- his own overseers ignored all of his distress calls,
Mikhail couldn't afford to be angry right now, he had the remainder of his Platoon and a large group of civilians that need protecting,
The appearance of an Avenger had inspired Mikhail to find out if Dr Bard was still alive- if the Black Widow could get that vaccine then perhaps he'd be able to sleep a little easier at night knowing that he'd attempted to repair the wrongs.
Suddenly the ground above them seemed to shake under the weight of explosions- everyone looked up wondering the same thing 'What the hell is going on up there'
Carlos attempted to call Jill on her Walkie-Talkie "Jill, Romanoff are you ok?" he asked as more explosions seemed to rock the ceiling above
"We should leave them" Nikolai insisted as he seemed to suddenly appear out nowhere 'again'- however everyone deliberately ignored his remark
"Carlos that monster is on our asses again!" Jill exclaimed-
Carlos took a moment to register what she'd just said "Are you shitting me!? I thought you said you'd killed it!"
He heard the explosions on the other end of the transmission- it drove him crazy that he wasn't up there
"Me too" Jill simply responded,
Carlos furiously brushed his hand through his hair, he needed to do something to help them
"Sorry Carlos, but we've got to run" Black Widow breathlessly stated through the comms
"Carlos?" Mikhail warned the agitated officer
"We need to do something!" Carlos stated as he rushed over to the weapons that they had left, he racked his brain for what he knew-
The monster had already been blown up with a rocket launcher and even that couldn't keep it down
"Don't get involved Oliveira- this isn't your fight" Nikolai warned him, but Carlos refused to listen after all the two women had put themselves in danger to rescue them before- now he could return the favour
"I'll be back with Jill and Romanoff in a little while" he grabbed the Claymore Mine that was reserved for special emergencies- and this definitely classified as a special emergency.
Carlos ran up the stairs with his plan set in mind,
Tyrell shrugged and laughed "What some men do for love" he joked as he went about setting up his gear for heading back out into the city.
"Captain a word" Nikolai insisted as he motioned to speak with him in private.
They head into the subway car away from anyone that might hear them
"Mikhail that creature- I suspect that it's Project Nemesis"
Mikhail felt as if someone had just walked over his grave- Nikolai was an officer within the U.B.C.S and shouldn't know anything about Project Nemesis
"How is it you know about the Nemesis? That information is strictly on a need to know basis"
Technically Mikhail wasn't supposed to know about it- but he'd pushed the subject when Dr Herman contacted him in regards to what type of combat training was being given to the U.B.C.S officers in his platoon.
"I still have contacts within Umbrella's Internal Espionage Unit" Nikolai smirked as if such a thing were to be proud of,
Mikhail had heard rumours of Nikolai's prior involvement with the Internal Espionage Unit- but till now he didn't really believe it.
Umbrella's Internal Espionage Unit were an untrustworthy and cunning group of spies that worked within the organisation handpicked by Colonel Sergei Vladimir himself.
There were other silent rumours about the group known as Hydra was entangled with the Internal Espionage Group, but Mikhail dismissed that as being ridiculous speculation-
He couldn't trust the other Russian man, he knew that if he allowed Nikolai to remain in the City with the Black Widow and the others then he would most likely stick a knife in their backs, at least by insisting that Nikolai boarded the train he could keep an eye on him
"I see... last I heard Project Nemesis had been transported from JFK to Raccoon City Airport, where it was meant to be contained safely in NEST"
Nikolai smirked he knew a lot more than the Captain of Delta Platoon and keeping Nemesis 'safely contained' was certainly not in Umbrella's plans- it needed a suitable field test and the outbreak had provided the organisation with the perfect opportunity to initiate their new B.O.W
"From what I've seen of it- it fits all the characteristics. It's on the hunt and you and I both know too well who it's after"
Mikhail shook his head, he found ignorance of his employers actions had finally come back to bite him on the ass
"Let's hope that's not the case comrade. Because if that thing is Project Nemesis then we are all well and truly fucked".
