Chapter One

I remember It was a normal day for the most part. I was cleaning my house, it was my day off from the hospital and I was using it to clean and do the things I don't normally get to, that was when the TV let out that Amber Alert sound.

"This is not a drill. This is not a drill." Played. I walked over and saw the broadcast. I watched in horror as it spoke about an infectious disease that reanimates corpses. I panicked a little, the sound was deafening and the voice was terrifying, that was impossible, I'd never heard of a disease like this, and I knew all of them. The last thing I heard was the Refugee camp in Atlanta, that all were to come... And then nothing. I ran upstairs grabbed a backpack and started packing needed things, I picked up the phone and called Lori. She picked up fast.

"Did you see?" I asked the moment she did.

"I did. We are comin' to get you." She said and I felt relief.

"We?"

"Carl, Me and Shane... Shane said he went to the hospital. Rick hes... Rick's dead." She whispered, probably to avoid Carl's ears. Her voice was hoarse and I leaned into the wall.

"Oh my god," I whispered, "Lori. I'm so sorry." I mumbled and I heard a sniffle.

"We coming down your street." She said and we hung up. I finished up grabbing everything I thought I needed as well as all the medicine I had in my cupboards. I ran outside and saw the car pull up and I opened the back door jumped in and there sat Carl.

"Aunty Y/N!!" He flew into my arms I held him to me.

"Hi baby," I whispered.

"Y/N." I looked up at my best friend Lori. I grabbed her hand as Shane began to drive. Shane and I didn't address each other. I laid back holding Carl as we drove outside town and I had this feeling nothing would be the same ever again.

"I am talking- emergency- line- please respond." The shit police radio went off and we all whipped our heads around to look. Amy ran to answer but the person just repeated themselves. I shook my head.

"That thing is a piece of shit," I said and Carl looked at me. "Just telling it how it is son." He giggled at me, he moved into my side as Lori watched Shane now try and talk into it. Nothing. "Told you," I whispered and I saw Shane glare at me.

"I told you we should have put signs up to warn people from the city," Lori said looking at Shane.

"We didn't have the time." He dismissed quickly.

"Find the time Shane."

"And who do you suppose goes up and does it, huh Lori?" He said looking quite annoyed.

"I will give me a damn car." She said and Carl looked at me.

"He won't let her," I said comforting him.

"No one goes alone ever." He said firmly and she huffed storming away angrily. Carl went to go after her but both Shane and I stopped him.

"Give her a second hun, mum is just worried about people," I said and he looked at me.

"What if she leaves?" He asked me worriedly and I smiled.
