Chapter Ten
I rocked Judith, while Hershel cared for the newcomers. I looked at my watch and knew it was time for a feeding, even if my watch was wrong or whatever, I still followed a routine for her, I walked into the main room where everyone was and walked past who we now knew as Tyreese and Sasha, they saw me holding the baby and both stood immediately, shocked looking at the baby in my arms. I went and began prepping her bottle.
"How old is the baby?" Sasha asked and I looked back at her.
"Barely a week," I said and she nodded at me.
"I never thought I would see a baby again... they're beautiful." She whispered and I smiled.
"Thank you," I said and held the bottle to her, she began to drink. She looked me up and down muttering.
"How are you feeling?" She asked and I looked at her awkwardly.
"She isn't mine," I muttered and she looked at me, I looked her in the eyes, and her shoulders slacked.
"Where's..." I shook my head and she frowned. "I'm sorry." She said and I nodded, accepting the apology, it was an honest mistake.
"Man, you people have been through the mill." He said as I walked past, and into the cell area, to be able to feed her and put her down for her next nap. Carl stayed with the group keeping an eye on everyone, I sat on the stairs looking at Carl, he also kept his eyes on me, and others. I heard them talking and then Hershel began walking to me.
"It's not up to me."
"Then Who?! You can see what kind of people we are...!" He called. "Is it her? Can we talk to her?!" Hershel looked like he wanted to plead with me. I nodded.
"Carl," I said and he took Jude from me. I went to talk to the group. "Listen, it isn't up to me, either," I said and they looked at me. "I can have some influence but... the leader, he's... He might not be easy to speak with..." I said and Tyreese looked confused.
"Why?" He asked.
"The baby... is his.. and the mother... was his wife. She passed away less than a week ago, and it has been shit. So when he comes, he may make you leave. Just know it's not personal." I said rubbing my hands together. "I can see how good you people are, but he may not, you know what's like out there, and it doesn't make people soft, it turns them hard," I said and he slowly nodded. "I'm sorry but it's just a waiting game now, we can let you bury your loved one, we have our own... grave sight," I said and they nodded. We let them out bury her and now all we had to do was wait, I waited with Judith sleeping next to me and Carl ran in.
"Dad's home!" He called and I nodded. "I'll wait here," I said and he ran back out. I was holding her next to Tyreese when it came to Rick, he stopped looking at all of us, and I walked toward him. Rick grabbed my arm pulled me into the cell area, and immediately looked at me and Jude, and I handed her off to him, she began to cry and I watched him, he suddenly started looking around, like he was hearing something, I held my hands up for Judith, concerned.
"Rick?" I whispered and he handed the baby over to me, I furrowed my eyebrows. "Are you okay, Rick?" I asked and he nodded lowly. "These people are good Rick, we need them," I whispered and he stared at me, his eyes were distant, I feared he would experience another break. "Hunny?" I whispered and he nodded slowly, and I nodded at him, and I leaned forward kissing his cheek. "Do what you need to," I said and Carl came up to me using grabby hands, I laughed, handing Judith to him, he was a good brother. He held her when I went to check on Michonne. She was knocked out, and I told Rick she wouldn't be waking for a while, he was eager to get her out, and I feared this for the others. Rick went to speak with them, I picked her up and I listened to Rick talk to them, Rick didn't look like... Rick, and when he said No, I felt dread fill my stomach. "Rick, we cant-"
