Breaking our eye contact Aunty Lin clears her throat. " Uh-hum, Jordan your needed in the back with the men", Aunty Lin says. Jordan releases my hand and exited the living room. Leaving me confused yet again. Aunty Lin motions for me to come over to her. I swallow the knot in my throat and go over to her. "Can I tell you a story sweet heart", she asked as we walked to the couch together. "Yes ma'am", I respond back. "It's about two brothers, one who is sweet and charming on the outside and broken on the inside. The other is broken on the outside trying to be sweet and charming on the inside. These two brothers come from the same womb and seed yet are so different. One day there father chose who would run each business, one would run the street business, and the other the trading business. Can you guess who he chose", Aunty Lin asked me. " No ma'am I don't think I can", I answer, confused as to where the story is going.
"Well isn't it obvious, the sweet and charming one with the broken insides, ran the street business. His father taught him everything he needed to know to keep his business strong and his money flowing. And he gave the trading business to the brother that was broken on the outside and trying to be charming on the inside, but he didn't have to teach this son much because he knew it all", she said. "His sons were his everything but soon this father knew he would be taken from his family and couldn't leave them with nothing. So he gave them his business and he was taken and killed a week later, and soon after the mother killed herself knowing she would never find another man like him", Aunty Lin continued," Leaving those two brothers all alone. Until on day they meet there aunt and they come to her begging her for help. And she does help, she gets a witch to look into there future, and the witch tells them two different tails. One brother will fall in love only to be betrayed by the one he loves most, and the other brother would find love only to be scared and mistreat it". I sit listening to the story.
" They live their lives with the wombs of their parents still in their hearts. Until one day one brother falls in love. And the other brother is too scared to fall in love so he focused on his business. Both knowing their fate and living with it," Aunty Lin finished. " Aunty Linda I don't understand, why are you telling me this story", I ask her. " Because this is the story you're apart of, and with the way Jordan keeps looking at you I think he knows it too", she says. " But Jordan doesn't even like me half of the time that can't be true. And I can't be with a drug dealer, I've seen first hand what drugs do to families", I respond back. "Who said anything about you being with the drug dealer", she says back " I was talking about you being with the trader", she says walking off.
I don't know when I realized she was talking about Jordan and Jamal. Maybe once Jordan told me about his life. Or when he finally opened up about his mother. It could've even been when the big betrayal happened. But it all came together for me one day and I realized she was right about it all. As people started to walk into the BBQ the crowd grew bigger and bigger. Their family was so mixed up I couldn't tell what race they where, they had black, Puerto Rican, and white family. I could tell they all had lots of money. Some sold drugs , some business owners, some just filthy rich, and some middle class. As the music played everyone drank and had a good time. I even seen some blunts in rotation. As I had a drink and ate my plate, I see two people coming my way a boy and a girl.
"Hey I'm Cici and this is my brother Charlie we are Jamal and Jordan's cousins , you must be Jordan's girlfriend", Cici questioned me. " Actually I'm not I'm just , a friend", I say back. "Well a friend is better than nothing, he doesn't really have friends or girlfriends", she said back. And I'm shocked at how open this family is to sharing information. I guess Jordan wasn't lying when he said I would learn more about him. " I'm not sure he would want me to know that", I say back. " It's not like she's lying though", Charlie said. I could tell they were brother and sister because they looked so much alike. And I could also tell they were Jamal and Jordan's cousins because they all shared some of the same features. " So Miss "I'm a friend" , who invited you then", Charlie asks me. " My best-friend Shayla and Jamal invited me, I haven't seen them all day have you", I ask as I finish my food.
