"Sometimes beautiful things come into our lives out of nowhere."
Two months later
JYOTHIKA
I sprinkled cinnamon powder in my golden milk with a satisfied smile.
Dusting my hands, I sat in the comfy chair on the kitchen island. Blowing the hot liquid, I hummed as I sipped the turmeric milk at midnight. Milk was my least drink, preference in life. Nowadays, Amma's recipe of milk with simple spices makes me relaxed and I can sleep like a baby.
I closed my eyes to feel this simple moment. There were many things to celebrate but I was most happy because of what I had in my present.
I might not be successful according to the high standards of society.
Most of my childhood was spent hoping to have someone or somewhere where I could be alive. Free of judgment. That's all I wanted.
I never expected that fate and faith in my Goddess to bless me with a blissful life. Little ordinary things turned my life into extraordinary.
I had best friends who would stay with me through any adversaries.
I had a grandmother -not one but three- their love that would guide and ground me in life.
Then I fell in love. I fought my feelings for years. Only to accept my defeat in front of his love.
And what a beautiful defeat it was.
Here, I'm from a doubtful, stubborn, rebellious college student, relationship-conscious, vulnerable girl to a strong hotelier, confident, hopelessly in love, married woman.
And...
I place my hand on my stomach and smile at my silliness. Nothing has changed. Yet.
The day might have started on a high note with a sudden theft issue in the restaurant and Prithvi's award function. I felt terrible about missing the event. My husband was honored as the best promising businessman of the Year. He has to go alone and is all the way more grumpy. I have to call him every hour, sometimes twice in one hour, to push him through getting ready in his tux to reach the venue and not escape, ditching the driver.
He was a go-getter, striking crores of deals but an absolute wuss if it was about socializing. I have to run out of his arms and seduce him with my puppy eyes to separate our ways for the evening. Sometimes, Prithvi imbibed my dramatic characteristics whereas I learned to be calm and cautious.
I have not informed at least verbally to anyone in our families and our B-5. I couldn't let myself share with our friends as I was kind of shy and a lot was going on between us with Kavya's situation. The elders had gotten some magical sense to guess what I was hiding. I was grateful they didn't urge me to confirm their suspicion. I needed Prithvi to know the news first. I wanted to be selfish for one day and forget about everything. Except for this moment, this night with Prithvi.
The sound of the door slamming shut interrupts my musing.
"Don't you dare send me to these stupid events if you're not coming with me!"
He directly barged into the kitchen. Knowing that I preferred to wait for him and couldn't do it without snacking. He assumed I got into the out-of-blue habit of late-night snacking. The reason was different and was beyond his imagination.
He folded the sleeves of his charcoal black shirt, removed his shoes, and carelessly threw them in the corner. He knew I hated his messy habits when he was worked up. I let it slide for now. Something more important was waiting to be dropped on him. I kept the doctor's name on the speed dial just in case he got too hyped up with the news. Or worse, fainted on the spot.
