The night of the apartment fire changed everything for Bobby Nash. 148 people died in that incident, and he was to blame. He had forgotten to turn off the space heater in drug pen apartment five floors below the one he lived in with his family. And now they were dead, along with so many others.

148 people died that night. But in his book documenting the lives he's saved, he leaves 149 blank spaces. Because 148 people may have died in that fire, but he lost one more because of it.

His eldest daughter, Riley Nash, was his pride and joy. From the moment she first opened his eyes, Bobby knew he would do anything for her. So when he injured his back and turned to drugs and alcohol to ease his physical pains, he pushed her away. He didn't want Riley - or his other children - to see what he had turned into.

Riley was affected the most by her father's change in behavior. They used to do so much together. He practiced volleyball with her, he went snowboarding with her, he watched cooking shows with her. He was at every game, cheering loudly in the front row. He was her number one fan and biggest supporter. He was her role model.

Until one day, late at night, he stumbled into the kitchen. It was clear he was incapacitated. Riley thought if she could get him to agree to going to her game in this state, then he would actually show up. He snapped at her, ugly words and names thrown at his daughter. He was only trying to push her away, he told himself once his mind cleared, he just wanted to protect her from him.

Riley gave up on him after that. And when her mother and siblings died in that fire, her dad ran away. He abandoned her.

Riley was over letting him hurt her, so she focused on school and volleyball. It lead her to an athletics scholarship at UCLA. And she got a job working as a 911 dispatcher at the Los Angeles service center. She did her best to forget all about the parent who abandoned her, until she crashes into a firefighter who lifts her from the ground.
