"Kai! Hurry up, you're going to be late for school!" His mom called.

Kai finished gelling his hair. He threw on a random top and some jeans, and ran downstairs. He inhaled his breakfast, grabbed his backpack, and ran outside. "Bye mom!" He yelled over his shoulder.

"About time. Come on, the others are probably waiting," Sarah said.
-----------
"Well, it's about time," Zao said, looking at his watch.

"Sorry. I woke up late," Kai said.

"Hey, is Payton coming to school today?" Lexi asked.

"I'm not sure. I forgot to ask her," Kai said.

Zao looked at his watch again. "We've got some time to kill. It's a 20 minute walk to school, and we have 50 minutes before we have to be there. We can wait for 20 minutes," He said.

"Mom said that we were going to be late!" Kai exclaimed.

"No kidding," Sarah replied.

The group waited for about 5 minutes. "Are you guys waiting for someone?"

Payton was standing there. There were still some bandages on her arm and legs, and there were also some cuts on her arms. But she was fine otherwise.

"Payton! You made it!" Kai exclaimed. He threw his arms around her. Kai was at least 3 inches taller than Payton. Yes, Payton is a little short for her age. But she's still taller than Zao and Lexi.

Payton hugged him back. "Yup, it's me!" She said.

Lexi giggled. "Aww, how cute," She said.

Kai and Payton pulled away. They were both blushing.

"I-It's not like that!" Kai stammered. But everyone else was laughing too loudly to hear him. Except for Payton.

"Nice going," She said, elbowing Kai in the ribcage.

----------

When they got to school, Sarah went her separate way, since she was in the grade above the other four.

"Dang, I hope Sebastian leaves Sarah alone," Kai said. He was pretty overprotective of his older sister.

"Well, this is going to be a boring day," Zao remarked. He was right. Zao, Lexi, Payton, and Kai shared all the classes they went to with each other.

"Well, let's just get this over with," Payton said.
----------
After a long day, it was finally duel period. Duel period took up the last two hours of school. The students did not have to duel, but they did have to stay on campus. Most kids duel, however. The only reason that the school board allowed a two hour dueling period is because it was loosely related to math.

"Payton, are you dueling today?" Kai asked.

Payton shook her head. "I think I'm going to watch for the day."

Kai knelt down next to her. "You're not scared of duel monsters, are you?" He asked.

Payton looked off to the side. "Well, to be honest, I kind of am. I just don't want to go through that again," She said.

Kai nodded. "Don't worry. Sure, it's supposed to hurt a little, but it's not supposed to hospitalize you. I won't let it happen again," He said.

Payton looked up at Kai. "Thanks, but, I think I better take the day off," She said.

Sarah walked over to the two of them. "What's up?" She asked.

"Seems like Sebastian got her scared of duel monsters," Kai said.

Sarah clenched her fists. "That little jerk!" She exclaimed. She looked at Payton. "Come on, I don't want you to be scared of a card game that you've loved all your life," She said.

Payton looked down at her feet. "Maybe I should ask my uncle for help," She said.

Kai nodded. "Good idea. You live with your uncle, and he owns a game shop. Heck, he's the person who got us all started on this game. We'll go after school for help. But for now, you need to make some progress," He said.

Payton stood up. "What do you mean by progress?" She asked.

Kai stood up as well. "I think you should duel Sarah. It might get you less scared. One you figure out that it won't hurt nearly as much as it did when you play Sebastian, then you'll be fine," He said.

Payton nodded. "I'll try it."

------------

"Okay Payton, you go first."

Payton looked at her hand. There were no monsters in her hand. They were all spell and trap cards. None of them would help her when she got attacked. They all just boosted her monster's attack. "I'll set these two cards face down," Payton said, setting down the two trap cards. "Your move."

Sarah drew a card. "First, I'll summon Armed sea hunter, in attack mode!" Sarah said.

Payton started to shake with fear. She knew that she was going to get hit directly.

"And now, I'll attack you directly," Sarah said.

Payton was backing away from the field. She was scared.

"Sarah, hold on!" Kai yelled from the sidelines. He jogged over to Payton. "What's the problem?" He asked.

Payton looked at the sea horse. "I'm scared," She said.

Kai wrapped his arms around her. "Don't worry. We'll get through this together." He nodded at Sarah.

Payton wrapped her arms around his neck. She heard Sarah call out the attack. Payton was trembling even more.

Kai just held her closer. He hoped that this would be the end of Payton's fear.

When the attack came, Payton tightened her grip on Kai. Her knees almost dropped to the ground. "Kai, I can't do this."

Kai patted the back of her head. "Okay." He looked at Sarah. "Stop the duel. She surrenders."
