ALEC

"Target's on the move. Five-mile radius from the perimeter, 20 minutes in."

"Roger that." I replied through the earpiece in my ear.

Martin shot me a quick glance from the side before looking back on the road.

"What?" I asked, annoyed.

He's been quiet the whole ride; he never even spoke a single word to me, and all he ever did was give me that look.

"Do you want to explain, or should I just assume?" He replied.

"Assume what?"

He shrugged his shoulders.

"That something happened between you and the governor's girl."

I turned away and looked out the window. The memory from that day still haunts me, both in a good and bad way. I'm still trying to process what just happened.

"Nothing happened."

"Bullshit." Martin cried out, and I glared at him. "I've been around way too long to know what sexual tension feels like between two people. And for the record, both of y'all were not doing a better job at hiding it."

I scoffed. "It wasn't just sexual tension."

He gave me a long look before his lips tilted up in a smile.

"So it was more than that, huh?"

I ignored the teasing in his tone and adjusted the rifle strapped across my chest.

"Whatever it is, it's not good for either of us."

The car ride continued in silence till we took the next intersection and spotted Emil's car heading towards us from a mile away.

I immediately sat up straight in my seat and tapped the earpiece in my ear.

"Eyes on the vehicle?"

"Yes sir." One of my men replied.

"How many?"

"Three, and they're on the move."

I slid my hand down towards the trigger of my gun and pinned my eyes on the moving vehicles up ahead.

"Get in position. Wait for my signal."

Right when the cars are only a few feet away, an explosion erupted out of nowhere, exploding the tires of the vehicle in the middle before it rolled over to the other side of the road.

Martin stopped the car immediately, and I jumped out and started shooting at the guys in the leading vehicle.

Many other gunshots erupted all around me, but my focus was on the other car that got targeted first.

I dove lower and slowly made my way towards it after spotting Emil and his men crawling out of the damaged vehicle one by one.

A bullet whizzed by my side, almost taking my left ear with it, and I quickly crouched down against the car to take cover.

Someone from their side was shooting from a distance in the hill, but they were nowhere to be seen.

A fucking sniper.

I guess we're not the only ones who came prepared.

"Take out the shooter on the hill. Cover me!" I yelled in my earpiece to the squad positioned there.

I barely heard their response before moving towards Emil again. He had managed to crawl his way out and was hiding on the other side of the car.

I grabbed my rifle and started shooting at them again. But none of them got hit.

As gunshots echoed around me, I felt adrenaline surge through my veins, igniting a primal instinct to survive. My heart pounded against my chest, each beat a reminder of the danger closing in. Amidst the chaos, my focus remained unwavering, fixed on one goal: reaching Emil before he could slip away again.

Ducking behind whatever cover I could find, I pressed forward, the cacophony of gunfire serving as a grim symphony to my determination.

The tension in the air was palpable, thick with the weight of vengeance and redemption. Each gunshot was a reminder of the stakes, driving me to push harder and to move faster.

Sweat beaded on my brow, mixing with the dust and grime of the deserted highway as I navigated the maze of obstacles between me and Emil.

With every passing moment, my resolve strengthened. I couldn't let Emil escape again; I couldn't allow him to continue his reign of terror unchecked.

Luna's kidnapping fueled my determination, a burning fire that consumed any doubt or hesitation.

As I closed in on Emil's location, the gunfire intensified, a desperate attempt to thwart my advance. But I refused to be deterred, each shot only serving to strengthen my resolve further.

With every fiber of my being, I vowed to bring Emil to justice and ensure that he paid for his crimes against Luna and anyone else he had hurt.

With one final surge of determination, I broke through the chaos, my eyes locking onto Emil's figure in the distance. There was no turning back now. It was time to confront the monster and end this once and for all.

I lunged at Emil, fueled by anger and adrenaline, aiming to take him down. But he fought back with surprising strength, causing me to lose grip on my gun.

His blows landed hard, each one stinging and fueling my frustration. As we grappled, I realized Emil was far stronger than he appeared.

In the midst of our struggle, he managed to overpower me, pinning me down with fierce determination. I watched in horror as he reached for my gun, his intent clear. The barrel aimed straight at my face, and my heart raced with fear.

But then a gunshot echoed through the air, shattering the tense silence. Confusion swept over me as Emil's expression shifted before he collapsed to the ground. I looked up to see Blair standing a few feet away, her gun raised, a realization dawning on me.

She rushed over, pulling me to my feet and enveloping me in a tight hug. Relief flooded through me as we stood together, taking in the scene around us. Emil's men lay defeated on the ground, a testament to our victory.

"Where's Luna?" I quickly asked Blair between deep breaths.

"She's safe. She's managed to escape. I held the border security back for as long as I could, and before they could hold me down, I escaped and came straight here."

A warm feeling of relief surged inside me upon hearing the news.

She's safe.

Martin suddenly limped towards us, and Blair let's go of my arm to grab his instead and offer support.

"You good man?" I teased, and he groaned in pain.

"The fucking bastard escaped."

"Who?" I quickly pressed him.

"Juan Santos." He answered breathlessly.

"Fuck. Let's go back to the border and make sure Luna is reunited with her father's people before Juan does anything to get to her." I informed them both before hurrying back to our cars.

My stomach churned uncomfortably, worried about the thought of Luna not being safe yet because Juan was on the loose.

I just hope she's okay.
