"Yeah, and the weather here is great, by the way. It's a bit colder today, but I'll manage."
"Well, take care of yourself, kiddo. Stay warm too," Danny replied.
I slipped the last few roses inside the vase. After a minute went by, I suddenly noticed that the line had gone silent.
"Uncle Danny, are you still there?"
A brief clearing of the throat before his voice returns.
"Yes, I'm still here."
I chuckled before moving over to the sink to fill the vase with water.
"Okay, that's great. I got these fresh roses this morning, and I'm putting them in a vase to take to Alec's place later. His living room could use some color."
"Alec," Danny drawled. "I've been meaning to ask you something about him."
I frowned in confusion before turning off the tap.
"What is it?"
"A couple of CIA agents came by the office the other day wanting to talk to you. They've been trying to locate Alec for weeks, but since he's gone under the radar, they've been having difficulties contacting him. Since you and he have a history together, they wanted to ask if you know where he might be."
My heart suddenly dropped after hearing what he just said, and my nerves overwhelmed me.
"But of course, I used the cover story we made up, but I'm doubting they bought it. So, just a little heads-up: these guys have probably found out where you are, and it's more likely they've found Alec too. So, keep an eye out for these guys," Danny said.
This was the last thing I wanted to happen. I know I've only been here for two weeks, but to me, that's still not enough time that I had spent with Alec.
It's not enough.
Now that his people are looking for him, it's probably because they want him back on the job or whatever. That means he's going away again, and this time, I'll never see him.
"Also, it's better if you warn Alec too. Given his current situation, I bet he doesn't want anymore surprises," he continued. "You were already enough."
I released a dry chuckle before facing the roses on the counter in front of me.
"Yeah, I'll tell him. Thanks for the update, Danny. Talk later. Bye."
I ended the phone call and stared at the white creamy petals of the roses.
Danny is right. I have to tell Alec what's going on.
OoO
I drove up to the hill where his cabin was, and to my absolute surprise, two black SUVs drove past me heading down towards town.
The windows were heavily tinted; I couldn't see anyone inside, let alone who was driving the vehicles.
Part of me hoped those were not the guys that Uncle Danny had warned me about. The other half was just looking forward to seeing Alec again and spending time with him.
The temperature had dropped a couple of degrees Celsius today, and the snow had gotten heavier too, which made it a little difficult driving up the hill.
But thank God I managed to get to Alec's place safely. Although I do worry a little bit about how I'm going to drive back down in this snow.
I carefully picked up the vase of roses from the backseat, locked up the car, and hurried to get inside.
