Here is what they don't tell you: Icarus laughed as he fell. Threw his head back and yelled into the winds, arms spread wide, teeth bared to the world. (There is a bitter triumph in crashing when you should be soaring.) The wax scorched his skin, ran blazing trails down his back, his thighs, his ankles, his feet. Feathers floated like prayers past his fingers, close enough to snatch back. Death breathed burning kisses against his shoulders, where the wings joined the harness. The sun painted everything in shades of gold. (There is a certain beauty in setting the world on fire and watching from the center of the flames.)
"Mack, would you like me to order you some takeout before I leave?" Tate asked popping his head into my office.
"What time is it?" I asked feeling confused.
"Almost 6:30" he answered as he looked as his watch.
"Shit! Don't worry about it" I replied realizing I was supposed to have a date with Will in thirty minutes.
Tate nodded and left for the day. I was in the middle of research for the Murphy case and I was no where near ready to knock off for the night. I dialed Will's number on my cell and prayed he hadn't started heading to my apartment to pick me up.
"Hello?" Will's voice answered into the phone.
"Will! It's Mack. I'm so sorry, but I have to rain check our date. I'm still at work in the middle of research for a case, and I won't be done till really late tonight. I actually might not even go home tonight and just sleep on the couch in my office" I explained feeling bad about having to cancel the date.
"How about I bring you take out at your office, and we have dinner there?" He asked with a smile in his voice.
"Are you sure? I might not be the best of company tonight" I questioned feeling bashful.
"Here's the secret I'm actually just getting done at work and eating dinner with you is what I've been looking forward to all day" he replied and I could hear the smile in his voice not wavering.
"That answers my question. I like pretty much anything, but I seriously could use a beer right now" I spoke with a smile.
"So, Chinese takeout and a six pack of beer it is" Will laughed over the sound of the New York streets.
"Sounds good to me. You know where the Young and Young Law Firm is right?"
"Yeah, I do."
"Okay, cool, my office is the first one you'll see when you exit the elevator" I smiled as I spoke.
"Alright, I'll see you soon then" Will replied.
"See you soon" I replied and then hung up.
