November 3, 1980
THE WIND WHISTLED as the trees blew side to side on the brisk autumn night. A small wooden house on a hill, creaking and lightly swaying in the night.
"Moons, I cannot believe he gave us this mission tonight! I mean of all nights." The young Black exclaimed quietly, his irritation extremely evident.
Sirius' twenty-first birthday was a huge deal. Despite being a huge landmark, he and Remus decided that it was safer to have a small gathering at home with only their closest friends due to the war.
"I know, but the faster we get this over with, the faster we can get back." Remus reasoned, raising his wand as they got closer.
"Harry is probably sound asleep," Sirius muttered. "And I didn't even get to hold him yet." He trailed off, angrily.
"Oh shut it, you'll get plenty of chances to hold your godson," Remus replied. But before Sirius could argue back they realized they had already made it. They looked around cautiously before stopping in front of the front door. The wind blew it open and the two made eye contact.
Someone had gotten their first.
Dread filled them as they walked into the home, the door creaking noisily upon their entrance. The house was quaint, however the vast amount of shoes at the door made the boys feel queasy.
They walked further and noticed unwashed dishes in the sink, pillows unkempt on the couch, and the bins overflowing with rubbish, but the next sight made it even worse. Six, maybe even seven, bodies lay on the ground.
They looked peaceful as if they were possibly asleep, but the two knew better.
The windows were shattered and glass littered the floor. But before the two could go upstairs and look for any more signs they heard a sniffle and a sigh. Then they heard a yawn.
A young girl who couldn't be over the age of three slowly wobbled down the stairs, before she could continue she spotted them and froze. They saw as small tears started to well in her eyes.
"Oh no, darling it's alright. It's okay..." Remus trailed off, stepping closer to her.
"Where did everybody go..." She whispered, looking around the room. The two boys made eye contact again but before they could say anything, the moonlight shone on something in the background.
A large sign displayed "Happy Birthday Cassiopeia" in large violet letters. That was when they noticed the uncut pink and white birthday cake on the table and the birthday hat in the girl's hand. Sirius nodded for Remus to continue his search while he walked closer to the girl and took her tiny hands in his.
"Cassieopia? Is that your name darling?" The girl only nodded in response and she wiped her nose with the back of her hand. He watched as she looked up at him, her hazel eyes shining with curiosity when she suddenly raised her arms for him to pick her up.
Almost cautiously, he did, bouncing her slightly in his arms. "Do you want to know a secret?" She nodded. "It's my birthday too," He whispered and he let out a small smile at her gasp in response. "I think it's pretty wicked we have the same birthday." She smiled at him before nuzzling her head into the crook of his neck.
"Is my birthday already over?" She asked quietly, playing with his fingers slightly. He sighed,
"No, but you'll understand when you're older," He brushed her dark hair away from her face, "But this just means that you got to meet me and Moony and we get to share our birthday." He turned as he heard Remus coming back to the kitchen.
"The house is empty, no one else alive. It's just her." His frown lifted into a small smile as he looked at the two together. "We've got to tell Dumbledore about her, y'know," Remus announced, as he cupped the girl's cheek as she had fallen asleep.
"Tomorrow. For now, let's get her home and worry about it tomorrow." Remus nodded but smirked slightly.
"You want to keep her don't you." He smiled.
"Of course I do, she's perfect." The Black whispered. They walked outside of the house, closed the door, and apparated back to the party.
As they walked into their front door, Abba echoed in the background. Marlene and Dorcas were sitting closely together, having a hushed conversation as they smiled with drinks in their hands. Peter was sitting on the floor next to the fireplace, his head resting against the brick and staring at the ceiling. James sat next to Lily with an arm around her while the two talked to Mary. Harry was fast asleep with his head resting on Lily's thigh, and her hand stroked his back. Before the two could say anything, James quickly stood up.
"What is that?" He pointed at them, and his wedding ring glimmered in the soft yellow light. Before chaos could ensue, Lily quickly shushed them all.
"She is sleeping and so is he." She pointed to the baby on her lap as she eyed James and spotted his gaze soften at the mention of his son.
"She was found at the house, alone, so we are taking her in and reporting her to Dumbledore tomorrow," Remus responded as he walked over to the pile of gifts on the floor. He plucked out the small black dog stuffed animal that James had purchased as a joke and nodded his head to Sirius to walk up the stairs. They placed her down on the bed in their extra bedroom, turned out the lights, and stroked her hair as they watched her squeeze the black dog in her arms.
