A Detective's Story

Chapter Six

I stand there for a few moments afterwards, absorbing what just happened.

When I say only one person knows my name, I don't mean that.

My mom obviously knows it, my dad does too.

There's only one person besides them.

My parents were . . . quite famous.

They were known for playing in a few horror movies.

Also for being the sweetest people alive.

They were very intelligent and matter of factly, but there was one thing they believed in.

Witches and Dragons. 

I can understand to an extent witches because of the legends, but I don't know why dragons out of all the stupid myths

My mom said she was  saved by a dragon once.

I don't believe her.

But on September 1st, the first day of fall, she saw something in a book about a ritual you can do.

Books are supposed to give knowledge, but this book obviously wasn't like that.

It was basically where you gifted someone's name to a dragon, to protect them forever.

I thought it was stupid, but she was my mom, and I would do anything to make her happy.

So I went through with it.

I forgot it for a while, but I always had the thought in the back of my mind that their was one more person who knew my name.

You guys might be wondering, what do people call me then?

You guessed it, Detective.

Obviously.

It's been a nickname in place of my name.

I blink a few times as I process what happened.

I also think back to when he said he could help me leave.

I hope he didn't mean Onyxbury, because I would love to leave. 

But hey, life's unfair, and you don't always get what you want.

I walk home that day, deep in thought.

If you asked, I couldn't even tell you what I was thinking about.

I was just . . . out of it the entire time.

As I step up to my apartment door, I spot a letter, one I know way too well.

Another one of my ex's letters.

I told him I liked letters, but this is too much.

I wish he'd just leave me alone.

But yet again,

Life is unfair.

I'll probably update in about an hour or so though, I am really feeling it today.
