Nolan sits down next to me and admires to iridescent ceiling. Which in truth it was beautiful. It reminded me of where I wanted to be so desprately. The ocean. The feeling of wanting to be there quickly increased when Mags, Ron, and Finnick comes in front of us.
"Hello you two, I'm Ron. I won't be continuing on this journey with you after this train ride, but I thought it only appropriate to introduce myself to you."
"Hey Ron, I watched your games." Nolan says.
"Ah."
Finnick leans forward. "I'm Finnick Odair, I'll be one of your mentors. This here is Mags, she's mute and won't say much, but her intel could be crucial to your survival." He puts his hand out to me. I ignore it and look over to Mags as she smiles and waves to us. I smile and sign.
"It's nice to meet you."
A stunned look appears on her face and she signs back to me. I smile and look back at the two boys, who are admiring the scene in front of them.
"How'd you?" Ron asks.
I hesitate before saying, "I have an older brother who uses sign language a lot to communicate. I also had a deaf uncle."
"Ah, so I guess forwarding information won't be as hard as previous years, I'm glad." Finnick says.
"If you don't mind me asking." Nolan peers in, "Why doesn't the other female victor mentor us? It would make more sense giving the condition of Mags."
"Annie hasn't been in the best state after her games," Ron says, "But she is getting the help she needs, you shouldn't worry about her."
I stare at Finnick's face, who seems to have reacted to what Ron said conflictedly. I couldn't read him. I couldn't put my mind on what he was thinking and what he felt. I couldn't understand him, which made me annoyed. I quickly looked away as I felt his head moving to look at me.
"So." I say quickly to cover it up.
"So I guess we start the mentoring now?" Ron says, patting the two on the back before walking away.
Mags signs, "What are the ages of you two?" I translate that back to Nolan before he says.
"Freshly 18."
Mags looks to me. "I'll be 19 tomorrow."
There's silence.
"Well that's bad luck..." Finnick says under his breath. I nod. "Um, skills?"
I look over at Nolan. His face says it all, "I can make a pretty good surf and turf. Lay knows how to actually surf."
"Trust me we know that." Mags laughs. I smile and look down.
"So that's all you know how to do? We have a chef and an ocean girl." Finnick says.
"Might as well give up on me, I'm dead in that arena anyways."
"Wow, great to know that you don't have any care for your life, then I guess we don't have the mentor you since you'll be throwing your life away in that arena anyways."
"Yeah well unlike you, people won't like me and send me gifts. Even if they did send me a weapon I wouldn't know what to do with it."
"But that's not the only way to win Nolan." Mags signs.
"Oh yeah, well I would give up on me. And give up on Lay too. All she knows is how to shut people out and surf well."
I turn to look at him. "Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
"So you two know each other?" Finnick asks.
"Friends since grade school. And trust me when I say that she's as much of a loss cause as I am!"
