Roller Coasters

"Go on the big one," they said.
"It'll be fun," they said.
Well, what now, Patricia?
I'd rather be on the ground instead.

I sat in the chair...
Trying not to think about the height.
I strapped myself in.
My anxiety, I had to fight.

I held on so tight that my knuckles turned white.
The world started to shrink and my heart started to sink.
I look over to my friend wondering, "When will this end?"

As we get to the top, the ride slows down.
As we go over the edge, the world slows down.
As we zoom forward, my breath stops.

I've never been on a roller coaster before...
And now I'm regretting getting on.
They said encouraging words.
They said, "C'mon!"

So I did.

I try to scream, but nothing came out.
I try to close my eyes, but that makes it worse.
I hold my friend's hand...
And under my shallow breath, I curse.

The wind rushes through...
My short ponytail.
Inhale. Exhale.
Inhale. Exhale.

"Breathe," I remind myself.
Upside-down we go.
Over a bridge...
And then below.

As the ride comes to an end,
My friend lets go of my hand.
With my shaky, wobbly legs,
I struggle to stand.

"You did it! You did it!"
My friend jumps and cheers.
And for once,
My anxiety disappears.

"I did it. I did it!"
I tell my friend.
"Ten out of ten.
But would not do again."
