Would you rather be proud or be proud?
Like getting an A on that test
Or being the fastest in the race
Or being the best dressed
Or getting first place?
Like killing your first deer
Or getting your first job
Or joining cheer
Or trying out for the part in Les Miserables?
Or would you rather be proud?
Like overcoming your depression
Or jailing your rapist
Or getting the attention
Of an idol or politician
Who finally sees you as more
Than a waste of space
Than a hopeless case
Than an ugly face
Than an absolute disgrace
Because that's all we ever let ourselves see ourselves as.
"Fire trucks don't stop at red lights"
But that was never a rule!
You beat yourself up over it that night
And then see your attacker the next day at school.
"Do you have barcodes on your wrist?"
No! They're on your thigh.
In your mind, they shouldn't exist,
But they're in the back of your mind when you get high.
Be proud, not just proud.
Jail your rapist.
Beat your depression.
Maybe one day,
You'll teach them a lesson.
