Song for this chapter is above, if you can't see it it's "End of beginning" by DJO or "As it was" by Harry Styles. I listened to them while reading this chapter and I felt like it fit
—————————————————————-June's Pov
As the city lights of Chicago twinkled below, I gazed out the window of the cab, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness swirling in my stomach. The decision to move closer to my dad had been a big one, but loneliness had settled into my bones like an unwelcome guest, urging me to seek solace in his presence.
The streets buzzed with life, a stark contrast to the quiet suburbs I was accustomed to. It was exhilarating, overwhelming, and oddly comforting all at once. I couldn't help but marvel at the vibrant energy pulsating through the city, imagining all the adventures waiting to be had.
Finally, the cab pulled up to my new apartment building, and I stepped out onto the bustling sidewalk, paying the cap driver. Taking in the sights and sounds of my new home. But as I stared up at the nondescript building before me, a pang of sadness pierced through my excitement.
This was supposed to be a fresh start, a chance to forge new memories and carve out a place for myself in the world. But without my mom by my side, it felt like something vital was missing. She had been my rock, my confidante, my guiding light, and her absence left a gaping hole in my heart.
With a heavy sigh, I trudged up the steps and entered the building, my footsteps echoing in the empty lobby. As I rode the elevator to the eighth floor, memories of my mom flooded my mind – her infectious laughter, her warm embrace, her unwavering support. I missed her more than words could express.
As I unlocked the door to my new apartment, another wave of loneliness washed over me, threatening to engulf me entirely. Memories of my Mom the overwhelming feeling of starting an entirely new life. Not knowing what god has planned for me. Coming back into the reality of life I noticed the vibration coming from my pocket and I quickly wiped away the tear that had escaped unnoticed.
I pulled out my phone to see a text from Iris, my best friend since sophomore year of high school. A small smile tugged at the corners of my lips as I read her message: "Wanna call?"
I replied immediately, eager for the familiar sound of her voice. The call connected, and I could hear the excitement in Iris's voice as she asked how I was settling in.
"It's a little strange being here without my mom," I admitted softly, my voice catching slightly. "But I'm happy to be closer to my dad, and to you, of course."
Iris's laughter filled the line, a comforting reminder that no matter where I was, she would always be there for me. We chatted for what felt like hours, reminiscing about old times and making plans for the future.
"So, how was the journey?" Iris asked, her tone eager.
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "Long and tiring, to be honest. But seeing the city lights as we drove in... It was breathtaking, Iris. The night life here must be amazing."
"Oh, baby, it is," Iris agreed. "And don't worry, babe, we're gonna have so much fun exploring together. But hey, tell me more about the apartment. Is it everything you hoped for?"
I glanced around the small, sparsely furnished space, feeling a pang of disappointment. "It's... okay, I guess. It's just hard, you know? This was supposed to be a new beginning, but it feels like I'm just... existing. You know it's not the same AS IT WAS."
There was a brief pause on the line before Iris spoke again, her voice gentle. "I know it's tough. But remember, it's okay to feel lost sometimes. You're not alone, okay? We'll figure it out together."
I smiled, grateful for her unwavering support. "Thanks, Iris. I really needed to hear that."
The conversation flowed easily between us, shifting from light-hearted banter to deeper discussions about life and the future. But as the call drew to a close, reality came crashing back in.
"I still need to get all my boxes and belongings from the basement," I mentioned offhandedly, feeling a twinge of anxiety at the thought of facing the task alone.
"I'm sorry, babe, I can't," Iris apologized, her voice filled with regret. "I have so much uni stress with exams coming up."
"It's okay," I reassured her, though disappointment prickled at the corners of my mind. "I'll just ask my dad for help."
After we said our goodbyes, I hung up the phone and sighed, suddenly aware of how empty the apartment felt without Iris's presence. But hunger gnawed at my stomach, reminding me that I hadn't eaten since the afternoon.
With a decisive nod, I grabbed my coat and headed out into the bustling city, eager to explore my new surroundings and grab a bite to eat. As I navigated the unfamiliar streets, I couldn't help but feel a sense of determination rising within me – no matter how daunting this new chapter of my life might be, I was ready to face it head-on, just like Mom would have wanted.
