Chapter 1: Arsonist's Lullaby

The Shipyard at Gotham City

Rain fell in sheets as a group of men stood in a circle at the docks. The water splashed against the cargo ships surrounding them, creating a heavy mist in the air. The roar of thunder rippled through the skies, electricity sending everyone's hair on end. The men whispered to each other, trading weapons where they stood.

A man stood in the shadows, eyeing them like prey. He strolled out, lightning flashing a bright white against his suit. He clutched a sword in his right hand, the blade glimmering in the moonlight. He wiped a hand across the right side of his face, clearing the droplets off, his black lensed eye glaring across the men. They raised their guns to him, shouting and cursing in his direction. He let out a grunt as one of the guns fired, clipping his shoulder. The bullet bounced off his armor, and he slowly turned, shaking with rage. He swung his sword, slicing through the men one by one. Blood spattered against his suit as he drove his sword into any flesh he could. He let out a soft sigh as they dropped to the ground, and he wiped his katana against his arm, blood smearing into the fabric.

Across the shipyard, a young girl perched on one of the cargo crates. Her white suit illuminated in the rain, and she gripped a trident in her right hand. Her raven hair was pulled back into a haphazard ponytail, and she was viewing the scene. She slowly crept across the crates, her shoes making soft noises against the hard metal, and she leapt from crate to crate, stopping a few feet away from the man.

As he turned, calculating his surroundings, something sharp hit the back of his armor. He let out a soft growl, turning behind him. The girl leapt from the crate, turning in the air, landing delicately behind him. Her face was contorted in anger, and she had her trident tucked into her side.

"I've been expecting you," the man said, his voice coming out gravelly, almost robotic.

"I'm here, Slade," she growled, fingers twitching against her weapon. He turned to face her, his eye narrowing in disgust.

"The feared Queen of Necrus, reduced to nothing but a widow," he murmured, barking out a laugh.

"Where is he, you piece of shit," she yelled, gnashing her teeth in frustration and anger. Her emerald eyes narrowed, the irises flashing blue as her voice echoed around the crates, "Where is Orm?"

The man shook his head, amused by her anger, "He's dead. Chopped up into pieces, reduced to chum floating around in Gotham Harbor."

"LIAR!"

She screamed in agony, clutching her weapon with white knuckles. Her body shook with the cold, and her teeth were bared. He stepped closer to her, placing a rough hand on her chin, digging his fingertips into her flesh. He could feel her shaking, watching her face twitching against the grip he had.

"You should've been more careful," he mused, dragging his thumb across her lips, "Becoming queen, creating relationships. Death follows you everywhere you go, yet you let it."

As he tutted to her, she had to hold herself back from killing him. She wanted to rip him apart limb from limb. She couldn't hold herself back much longer, and he leaned in close to her his eye narrowing further. The rain dripped down his mask, glowing against the pale skin just under it. She let out a low growl, lunging forward, sinking her teeth into the soft, spongy flesh. Biting down, she could taste the metallic liquid against her tongue, salty and warm. Her fangs dug deeper into his flesh, tearing jagged strips into the tough muscles, and she ripped her head back. As the skin hung from her lips, he'd clutched a hand against his neck, wailing. She spat it to the side, admiring her work. A large chunk was missing, the ebony glow of his bone evident. Maroon liquid quickly turned it dark, the blood gushing and squirting as he tried to hold pressure to his wound.
