Smoke.
You woke up to the smell of smoke.
Opening your eyes slowly, your suspicions were confirmed when you saw the room filled with grey.
You felt around next to you. Gracie was still sleeping next to you, she hadn't woken up. You shook her, but she seemed completely out.
"Gracie wake the hell up" you shouted.
But the girl didn't. She wasn't waking up.
You shook her again, and then again.
"GRACIE" you shouted louder, but the girl was unconscious.
You had been that focused on Gracie that you had forgot to not breathe in the smoke, causing you to go into a coughing fit.
Why the fuck hadn't the smoke alarms gone off.
You knew you had to get out of there, but you also needed to get the brunette out too.
You picked her up, struggling but managing to hold her bridal style.
Making your way out the room, you tried to guide yourself downstairs. But the visibility was shit, and you had Gracie in your arms.
Stepping carefully down the staircase you finally made your way down and made your way to the patio door.
It was too far to get to the front door, so the back would have to do.
You pulled the glass sliding door, attempting to open it but it didn't budge.
Fuck.
You yanked the handle with force, managing to click the door open.
After opening the door you breathed in the fresh air from outside, choking as you sat down on a sun bed and let Gracie lean on you.
"Gracie please wake up" you said, cupping her face with one hand, calling 911 with the other.
Minutes felt like hours before the firefighters finally turned up. Gracie had luckily started to stir, and was looking around confused.
"What's going on-" she asked frantically, coming to her senses.
You bit your lip, just feeling relief that she had actually woken up.
"No idea. Luckily I woke up, or we would have been toast by now" you answered dryly, feeling suspicious about this whole situation.
Gracie looked like she was about to say something else when a firefighter came over to talk to you. He looked shocked to say the least.
"Do you girls live here?" he asked.
"I do" Gracie answered, trying to sit herself up.
"Well... we had a look through the house. Luckily there's no fire. But that smoke could have killed you if you stayed in there any longer"
You eyed him confused.
What did he mean there was no fire?
"What do you mean there was no fire?"
He scratched his neck before saying anything more. "There was no obvious fire, and on top of that we checked your fire alarms and the wires were cut through."
"Cut through?!" Gracie asked, shock filling her face.
"It seems so. I hate to say this. But I don't think this was an accident. We have alerted the police to come and talk to you both" the firefighter said, before walking back over to his truck.
You looked over to Gracie, but her expression was just as shocked and confused as yours.
"Someone deliberately sabotaged the alarms" She finally said, but not really as a question.
You just nodded, trying to make sense of it all. If someone had actually done that, then they had purposely tried to get them killed. This was so messed up.
30 minutes later a police officer had come to question you and Gracie, who bounced her leg up and down next to you anxiously.
"Does anyone else have a key to your house?" the officer asked the brunette next to you.
"No- only my parents..."
"Okay. Is there anyone who you have fallen out with recently. That may have wanted to cause you harm?"
Your head started twisting with confusion. There was only one person who had it out for you right now, but surely not... she wouldn't do something that extreme. She couldn't be that sick.
Gracie seemed to clock onto your thoughts, but remained silent. They couldn't say anything without valid proof. Was Claire even at that party?
"No" you both said in unison.
The officer clicked his pen back into his pocket and then stood up.
"Okay. Both of you need to find a hotel or other accommodation until the smoke fully clears out of this house. We will be in touch with more questions soon, as do we think this was some kind of attempted murder" he said as calmly as possible.
You almost choked just hearing that. What the actual fuck.
Gracie seemed to have the same reaction, her hand squeezing yours anxiously as the officer got back into his car.
"This is so messed up" you muttered, pulling out your phone to call Olivia.
"I know" the brunette said, putting her hands over her face.
Liv finally picked up after the fifth call, her voice completely slurred from probably too many drinks. But she sobered up immediately after hearing what you had to say.
You hung up, putting your phone back into your pocket.
"Liv said we can go stay at hers. She's still at the party. But she'll be home soon. I have a key to her house" you said nervously.
Gracie nodded, quickly pulling your hand towards her Range Rover as she removed the keys from her jacket pocket.
