several weeks later azrael gathered the voltron force himself for a change
"progress update, at the princess's request, i have made the lions as powerful as i can possibly make them, meaning that a single lion can likely take on my fleet and win, with a competent pilot that is" i said, they paused, having see first hand the size of the fleet and the capabilities of the fleet that was impressive
"this by no means makes the invincible, now, the reason i called you, the lions are........ more temperamental now as a result to all of my upgrades, i'm not sure why but the lions never stopped me no matter the upgrade i was making" i said
"it's a sign of trust, continue azrael" she said, i nodded
"your voltcoms are useless at least where connecting to voltron is concerned, also the lions may reject you to pilot them, let me make that clear, they may reject you as pilots" i said, directing my attention very specifically at pidge and hunk
"you two will likely take my place as the head mechanics to the new voltron, congratulations, when i am done with steps two and three of this entire process i'll walk you through how to care for them" i said
"what happens if we are rejected" keith asked
"depends" i said
"on" allura asked
"how stubborn you choose to be, there is an override in place which i will be giving to the princess, do not use it, as it is in place in case, in the very unlikely event someone actually manages to hijack the lions" i said
"unlikely but possible" allura said
"no amount of locks in the world can prevent that, especially if a lion likes someone, they have the power to bypass a majority of the locks i've put in place" i said
"with the exception of the override what does it do" she asked
"it forces the lion to submit to the will of the person who gives the override, for that reason alone i expect the code to die with you, i am giving it to you because i trust you" i said, she nodded her understanding
"what are steps two and three" keith asked
"step two is the final piece to the new voltron, step three, is the training and preparation of the pilots, i will be personally overseeing that of course" i said
"you aren't partaking" larmina said
"the only lion that seems to want to bond with me is black, i do not think i want to take keith's place" i said
"won't you be leading the charge against the kyodai dragon" keith asked
"I will, from gunbuster, i'm gonna making upgrades to that as well, and i will be taking over control of that machine once those upgrades are complete" i said, the group looked at each other
"i'd prefer it if you were a part of the team" allura said, the rest had similar sentiments i could see it on their faces even larmina
"i will think about it, now there are certain things about the lions i will keep to myself, but i will say this piloting a lion is no longer something you can just walk away from when you feel like retiring, it is a life commitment the bond between lion and pilot will be very, very deep, and the paladins of voltron will be living very long lives" i said
"define very long" lance said
"several centuries" i said, their eyes widened
"that's possible, you can extend human life" pidge asked
"no, and that is the final crux of this, in order for a lion to more safely bond with their pilot, the pilot in question must give up their humanity, which is one reason why i said this was a life commitment, you will die as a lion paladin" i said
"was this done because i told you to make all upgrades available to voltron" allura asked, i hesitated before nodding
"there were some dangerous things that i ended up adding because of that request" i said
"you've given us something to think about, azrael" keith said
"if it's an consolation, you have my deepest apologies" i said
"you have done as i asked, you have not any reason to apologize" allura said, i bowed my head anyway
"i'll leave you all to it" i said
"before you go, one question from me, if you had to would you take voltron to fight" he asked
"i would protect my people, no matter the cost to myself, but piloting voltron alone is not something i'd recommend, while possible the strain placed on the pilot could kill them, would i do it anyway, if necessary yes, in a heartbeat, and i'd die with my head held high" i said answering his question neatly, leaving the room
"he may have started off unwilling, but he rivals you keith" lance said
"he's surpassed me" keith corrected, that look in his eye was nothing but pure raw determination, to simply get the job done
"do you know what step two is" pidge asked allura
"not entirely i know he intends to give the lions some sapience to help us, how far that will go i'm not honestly sure, he showed me what he was working with but he never told me the outcome
