~Katie’s POV~

The car ride was quiet, the faint music from the radio the only sound. Lauren sat in the front with Anne so Ashton could sit in the back with me, his head resting on my lap, slowly drifting to sleep.

Sure, it was technically illegal—especially Lauren sitting in the front—but we didn’t care as long as Ashton stayed calm and didn’t start crying again.

I ran my hand through his hair, staring out the window as we pulled up to a small two-story house. When the car stopped, I bent down to kiss his cheek and wake him.

As we got out, Ashton didn’t let go of me—holding my hand as we walked, keeping his arms around my waist while I carried the smaller bags.

“I figured you two slept in the same bed, but if not, I can set up a bed on the couch for Ashton,” Anne said as we entered the house.

“No, it’s fine, Mom,” Ashton said, still holding my hand, walking toward the stairs.

“I’ll take Katie upstairs, show her around, and probably get some sleep,” he said, pausing to look back at his mom.

“Okay, I’ll stay downstairs. Lauren might stay down here or go to her room,” Anne replied. Ashton gently pulled me up the stairs.

After showing me the bathroom, we went to his room. He sat down on the bed, pulling me onto his lap so I was straddling him. His hands rested on my sides, and I wrapped my arms around his neck. Slowly, he moved his hands under my hoodie, slipping it off to reveal my tank top underneath.

“It gets hot in here,” he said, placing his hands back on my sides. We stared at each other in silence for a few minutes.

“Baby,” he whispered.

“Hm?” I replied.

“I want you.”

“I’m right here,” I said.

“No, Katie. I want you right now… tomorrow… forever. I want you.”

“Okay. I’ll be here right now, tomorrow, and forever,” I said, pressing my hands to the sides of his neck and kissing him. He turned his face to deepen the kiss, sliding his shirt over his head as he kissed my jawline.

“Ashton…” I whispered.

“Hm,” he hummed against my neck.

“Are you sure you want this? Your brother just died…” I asked.

“Baby, if we don’t, I’ll cry again. And I’m tired of crying right now,” he whispered, wrapping my legs around his waist and flipping us over.

“Okay,” I whispered, pressing my lips to his again.

When I woke, Ashton’s arm was wrapped around me. I checked the time—7:15 a.m.—and buried my head in his chest, falling back asleep.

~Ashton’s POV~

I felt Katie stir and pulled her closer as she dozed off again. It was 10:30 a.m., and she was still asleep on me. I’d been awake for an hour, listening to my mom and Lauren downstairs. I didn’t want to wake her.

We had the next two weeks off school. Katie would be a sophomore in college, I a junior—graduating at different times—but I wasn’t leaving New York until she wanted me to. I was in it for the long run.

Katie finally woke up.

“Hey,” she whispered, pulling the blankets around herself.

“Hey, baby,” I said, brushing hair out of her face.
