KEIRA P.O.V

The moon hung low, casting eerie shadows across the rooftop where my sister Cole and I stood, surrounded by the faint hum of the city below.

"You know that you have changed, right?" Cole's voice sliced through the quiet night, pulling me from my thoughts.

I blinked, caught off guard. "Changed? How so?"

"You're not like yourself anymore," she insisted, her tone tinged with concern.

I furrowed my brow, trying to decipher her meaning. "What do you mean?"

"You're different when you're with Kai," Cole pointed out, her words heavy with observation.

"You always smile with him. You laugh with him. You look happy with him."

I scoffed, feeling a flush creep up my neck. "It's not like that."

But Cole wasn't convinced, her gaze unwavering. "It is. You treat him differently. You never treated someone like you treat him. Not even your little sister."

As she continued, a spark of irritation ignited within me. Happiness? Weakness? Not in my vocabulary. Especially not for someone like Kai.

I clenched my fists, the night air suddenly feeling colder against my skin. Happiness was a foreign concept, a distant memory lost in the shadows of my past. And yet, there he was, with his infectious laughter and warm smile, threatening to unravel the carefully constructed walls around my heart.

But I couldn't let that happen. I couldn't afford to be weak, not now, not ever.

With a determined shake of my head, I squared my shoulders, meeting Cole's gaze head-on. "I'm not weak," I declared, the words ringing out into the night. "Especially not for a person like him."

That night, I was standing outside his house waiting for him to return. The chill of the evening seeped into my bones, matching the frost that had settled within me. After what felt like an eternity, he finally appeared, carrying bags of groceries.

"Hey," I greeted softly, my voice barely audible above the whispering breeze. "I was waiting for you. It's time for the recharge," he said, extending his hand towards me.

I hesitated, my fingers hovering in the air before retreating back to my side. "But what if I don't?"

I questioned, the words catching in my throat like thorns.

Confusion flickered across his face like a fleeting shadow. "What?" he asked, his brows furrowing in perplexity.

"I honestly don't understand why I'm being nice to you," I confessed, the bitterness staining my words like acid. "You wanted darkness in this world, and I could have brought that easily. I shouldn't have gone through so much effort."

"Keira... What's wrong?" he murmured, stepping closer to me with a tenderness that only fueled my anguish. His touch, as he reached to fix my hair, sent a tremor through me, betraying the turmoil within.

I met his gaze, my eyes pleading for him to see the wounds he had inflicted. "Did I do something?" he asked, his voice laced with genuine concern.

"Yes, you did," I whispered, pushing him away with a force born of desperation. "You made me look weak in front of others."

Confusion clouded his features once more, but before he could utter another word, fate intervened cruelly. In the blink of an eye, his world shattered, and mine along with it, as he was struck by a stroke.

As time passes by, strokes become worse. Each passing second felt heavier, burdened by the weight of Kai's deteriorating health. I watched, helpless, as he struggled on the floor, his body contorting with pain.
