Levi:
So I lied, I didn't leave her alone.
In fact I looked for her almost everywhere I was, wether it was in-between classes, lunch, or just when I was walking in the hall. Apparently she was in Lottie's journalism course, which I found out at lunch when she started talking about a new assignment that they had. The mystery girl had been paired with Lottie to write the sports section of the schools news paper, Which hopefully means that I'll be able to see her again.
"What was she like?" I ask Charlotte as we sit down for lunch along with West, Hunter and Rose who we're already there. "She was, well. " Charlotte begins "She was nice I guess." "What do you mean?" Asks West "Well I mean that she was very quiet, I would talk to her and only get nods or one worded responses. Sometimes no response at all." Charlotte explains sadly. I can understand why she was a little upset. Lottie was one of the kindest girls on this earth everything about her was inviting and warm from her shining smile to her honey sweet voice that much like her brothers had a southern twinge to it. And she wasn't used to being ignored, I'm not saying that she was a spoiled brat in that way, because she is wonderful. But still, it's just different for her. Hell I didn't like being brushed off either, and I won't be.
Standing up from the lunch table I turn to my friends and mumble a half baked excuse about studying and the library and prayed that they believed it.
I Walked out of the cafeteria and down the main hall towards the library. I wasn't looking for her, I did need to study. I needed to study this new book called "Pride and Prejudice." not because the girl was reading it but because I like to read and I wanted to expand my knowledge of the classics beyond if you give a mouse a cookie or if you bake a moose a muffin. Both of which are premium quality literature.
Walking into our schools library I am instantly greeted with the unique smell of old, worn books and the unpleasant mix of sweat and BO that is in almost every corner of this school. This schools library was old and hadn't been updated in years meaning most of the books were out dated and the same goes for our text books. Dust covered most of the shelves as well as the old computers in the back along with every other available surface. As I made my was deeper into the library I walked past the receptionists desk and said hello to Ms. Clark the schools sweet old librarian. I was mid conversation with Ms.Clark, who had asked about this years up coming football season. (She was our number one supporter.) When I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and I saw the familiar flash of black framed glasses and long brown hair. It was her, after excusing myself and bidding Ms. Clark a good-bye I made my way over to the mystery girl.
"Hey, what are you up too?" I ask casually from behind her as she was clearly struggling to put a book back on the shelf. why would I ask her that she's doing if it was obvious? stupid Levi, so stupid. And the look she gives me says as such when her deep brown eyes lock on mine and she cocks an eye brow as if to say "Isn't it obvious." and before I can think I ask "Would you like some help? You seem to be struggling just a little." Her once confused eyes narrow some. Good job Levi you probably just offended the poor girl, shut up me! "Not that you look like you need help, well except you kinda do. And there is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with needing help. I need help all the time, sometimes I need my friends help just getting out of bed." great now I'm rambling, why can't I hold a normal conversation for once? ughhh. A ghost of a smile almost crossed her face but it was gone as quick as it came, and just the slightest twitch of her lips were able to cease the words about to make their way out my my mouth. Which is good because they would have been with out a doubt embarrassing. She quickly and lightly shoves the book into my hands and I notice that it was a different one than earlier. But the cover was worn and I didn't want to look weird by just standing there squinting at the cover as I tried to figure out the title. So I reach my arm above her and put the book back on the shelf that she was trying to reach. As I was bringing my arm back down she holds up a hand to stop me from bringing my arm all the way down. Confused, but compliant I let my arm remain slightly stretched, thinking she may need another book. But she surprises me further by pointing back at the book and motioning for it to go over one more space to nestle in between what I think is a book about poetry and another about mathematics. These books are terribly out of order. Smiling down at her I fix my mistake and say "Is that better sweetheart?" I have no clue as to what possessed me to call her sweetheart, it just felt right so I did it. But from the look on her face I'm guessing that it was wrong opps. "I umm.." I start but she interrupts me "I am not your sweetheart." She grumbles out. it wasn't loud but then again nothing about her was loud not her voice, her clothes, her eyes or hair. To the common eye they we're all ordinary, which at first glance is what she appeared to be Ordinary, like she tried and wanted to blend in. But now that she had caught my eye there was no way she would blend in ever again. Taking a closer look at her she was beautiful. her long hair fell in messy waves over her back and shoulder and her plain black shirt fit her snuggly but perfectly, pairing with the baggy jeans she wore it only emphasized her figure. "I.. I know that you're.. you're not my sweetheart. it.. it was just..." I trailed off and tripped over my words. It was times like these when I wished I was as confidant as West or cold and Hunt but nope I was just good ole' me. Awkward, funny Levi. She smiled at my struggle to find words and it was breath taking. Like she had stolen the air from my lungs and the light from the room as it shone in her eyes. Beautiful. "Hi, I'm Levi" I say finally hoping to just wipe the slate clean and start again, and stuck out my hand.
Her deep amber eyes bore into mine as she looked at my hand and back to my eyes. "Birdie" she answers and shakes my hand. "It's nice to formally meet you Birdie seeing as you ran away from me in the grocery store the other day." I tell her with a smirk it was kinda cute how flustered she had gotten then and much like she was now. as I dropped her hand her neck and ears grew pink and my smile grew wider. But just as I was about to say something else the bell rang and the few other students in the library began to shuffle to their next class. Turning back to face mystery gi... I mean Birdie, but when I looked back she was gone. Now walking out of the library with her bag slung over one shoulder and headphones in her ear.
She had ran away from me again, but at least now I knew her name.
