Chapter 8: You Can't Say No to a Butler
It took me a moment to realize I had walked out of my home without a jacket. Lost in my thoughts, only Bastet's insistent meow brought me back to reality.
"Huh?" I looked down at her, nestled in my palms, her small body trembling from the cold. Despite her thick fur, the biting winter air of Gotham was too much for her delicate frame. "Shoot, I forgot." I hurried back inside, slipping on my (F/c) jacket and grabbing my 'Father's' gloves. Gently placing Bastet inside one glove for warmth,
I said, "Okay, now let's get ready to go." I kissed Bastet's nose, her soft purring soothing my frayed nerves, and we stepped out again. "Sorry about that, Bastet. That call with my mom threw me off. Between you and me, she's not coming back anytime soon. But now, let's go to the pet store."
She gave me a questioning meow, her emerald eyes searching mine. "Well, I've never had a cat before, so I need supplies. You need food, treats, a bed, a few toys, bowls. I can't forget the litter box or a scratching post; my 'parents' would flip if I let you have a go at the furniture." I joked, trying to lighten the mood, but Bastet only gave me an unhappy look, as if she understood the gravity of our situation.
"Don't give me that look; you can pick out the ones you like, don't worry." The rest of the walk was calming, distracting me from my worries about joining my family in taking over the world one day. But what if something changed, and I backed out? Could I still face my family? Would they take me back?
Another meow brought me back to reality. We had arrived at the pet store after a twenty-minute walk, the streets bustling with last-minute shoppers preparing for the holiday festivities."Welcome, Happy Holidays," one of the workers greeted us, a warm smile gracing her lips. I returned the greeting with a nod, offering a small smile in return.
"Happy holidays." I took Bastet out of the glove and placed her in my hand, tucking the glove into my jacket pocket.
We made our way towards the cat aisle, overwhelmed by the array of choices before us. "I should have asked Selina for help," I muttered to Bastet, who seemed equally lost in the sea of options. "Hello there, do you need help with anything?" a young lady approached us, her name tag reading Bella."Oh, yes. I just got a cat, but I don't have any supplies for her." Bella's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she smiled. "Well, I can help you with that. Let's start with food. How old is your kitten?" she asked, her gaze flickering to the shelves lined with various cat foods."I'm not sure, maybe around 10 months." Bella nodded, her fingers expertly selecting three samples from the shelves.
"These are some of our clients' favorites." I lifted Bastet so she could sample the food, watching intently as she sniffed each one with curiosity.
"Okay, Bastet, time to pick out some things for you. What do you think?" I held my breath, waiting for her reaction as she tentatively tasted each food. The first one elicited a gagging sound, causing Bella and me to chuckle. "Okay, try this one," Bella suggested, and Bastet's response was much more favorable this time.
"Great, now let's find you a bed," Bella said, leading us to the cozy section filled with plush cushions and soft blankets. Bastet sniffed a few options before settling on the largest, fluffiest bed she could find, her tail swishing in approval."Alright, let's see what catches your eye," Bella said as we reached the toy section, where colorful balls and dangling feathers awaited. Bastet's eyes lit up with excitement as she spotted a feather wand, her tail twitching with anticipation.
