Satiya woke to find Amisi gone. She had just started to work up the nerve to leave the safe house when the human returned with a loaf of bread and a jar of jam. Realizing now how hungry she was, Satiya had three slices while Amisi had one.
"The next closest temple to here is for Thoth, God of the Moon and Scribes," Amisi explained around her breakfast.
"Scribes?"
"Like, writing things?"
"I know what a scribe is, I was just wondering what the moon has to do with scribes."
Amisi shrugged.
They arrived at a small temple that was obviously for Thoth as there were moon motifs carved all over the building. They walked inside to find what looked like a school room: rows of desks facing a blackboard, and human males of various ages scribbling at each one.
A young man walked quickly up to them, hand out to stop them, "I'm sorry, but we aren't open for tours today. Please come back tomorrow."
Amisi wouldn't be deterred, "We aren't here for a tour. We are... looking for something."
Satiya shot her a glance. Should she be so open?
"You'll have to come back tomorrow. We are closed to visitors-"
"Fahid!" a voice came booming from the far side of the room. All the scribes-in-training stopped what they were doing. The young man winced.
"Let these ladies pass. I think I would like to speak with them."
Bowing apologetically, Fahid stood aside as Satiya and Amisi went to talk to whom they assumed was the Head Priest of Thoth temple. He took them into a side room and closed the wooden door, turning to look them over.
"I received a message from my sisters at Bastet temple that someone has come looking for the keys. I can only believe that is you two."
The pair nodded, dumbly.
"Bastet did not care what your goal was, only that you were worthy. But I care. Before I will test you, I need to know what you plan to do with Ra's Blade."
Amisi nudged Satiya, who started, "According to intelligence gathered by Amisi's spy network, the secret society..." she looked at Amisi, waiting for a name.
"Order of the Night."
"... has released some being they believe is a deity named Kek."
There was a sharp intake of breath from the Priest.
"They have captured my mother and father to do this, and Kek plans to use them to regain his power. We don't have the means to rescue my parents, but if we can get rid of Kek in such a way that he can't be released again, then my parents will be safe."
The Priest had a dark look on his face, but said, "Kek is bad news. If you can seal him before he comes to full power, it would be a good thing. I will test you. But I am going to insist that I give you someone to assist you on your quest. It is too important."
"Give us someone?" Satiya thought.
"Khait!" the Priest called.
After a minute a young man entered the room. He had dark-bronze skin, black hair buzzed short, and green eyes. He wore a white tee-shirt with a green fitted vest over the top, blue jean shorts and sandals. He was carrying a pen in one hand.
"Khait, please meet..."
"Satiya"
"Amisi"
He continued, "I need you to accompany them."
