'You Get Me So High' The Neighbourhood

But I just had to let you know
I never meant to hurt you though

Sevyn Imani Edwards

The last time paige and i looked at each other like this was the first time we stopped talking. I didn't expect us to get back like that so soon—or at all. I expected us to be thriving and official by now. I thought we would've had the girlfriend label already but that might've just been me with my expectations a little too high.

We agreed to be friends but i knew it was hurting us both. I told her i would wait until she was ready but would i really keep that promise?

I mean i hope so.

I liked paige enough to stick around until it was time for us to move further—or maybe we would just stick to being friends. There was no escaping each other. Her friends consider me a teammate and drag me everywhere with them. I thought it would be a problem but paige seems to handle it well. She treats me just like how she would treat any other friend. Well, sometimes.

The team and i were all at paige's after we successfully planned a movie night. I was stuck making brownies and cookies for everyone to watch with the movie. I had help from KK but she abandoned me real quick to go play fornite with them until i was done.

I didn't mind though. I was by myself doing something i enjoyed and while i liked the company, i liked having the kitchen to myself.

I was currently in the kitchen, keeping an eye on the desserts in the oven. I could hear the loud noises coming from the living room which caused me to smile. it was never a dull moment with them around.

Despite the team knowing about paige and i's complicated situation, they never once attempted to leave me out. They were just as much of a friend to me as they were to her, which surprised me. I didn't think that the situationship i had with paige would draw them closer to me, but it did.

Speaking of paige, she was being more distant than usual tonight. So, it surprised me when she walked in the kitchen. I assumed she came to ask if the desserts were done since it was all they were talking about.

"um you can let the girls know they're almost ready" i pursed my lips together and gave her a small smile.

"i didn't come in here for that...but sure thing" she replied as she leaned against the counter, staring at me.

"oh" was all i managed to say. i couldn't find words and didn't help that she was staring at me. She opened her mouth to speak but nothing came out. i guess she was as speechless as me.

After an awkward moment of silence, she let out a sigh which caused me to look up at her. Her fingertips were tapping rhythmically against the countertop as her gaze steered away from me. "sev, i don't want things between us to be like this...i never meant to hurt you, i'm just a little conflicted right now. i've never had anything—or anyone feel as important to me like you. it's always just been basketball—"

"i get it. you don't have to explain yourself..." I quickly cut her off before she got the opportunity to ramble in order to explain herself about a situation that i thought we had mutual understanding for.
