Background
Backstory:
As a young girl she grew up with a positive family. She was a party girl at heart though and enjoying dancing, listening to music and all sort. When she was 7 her parents got in an accident and she was left parentless. Her family had been close with Hopper and his family at the time so he ended up taking her in, this was 2 years after his real daughter was born, and one year after he'd moved to New York with his family. When his real daughter, Sara, died, Marcy was just as upset, having grown to see the younger girl as a sister. When he moved back to Hawkins in 1979, Marcy went with him. At this point she was 13.
During her teen years she went through a very rebellious phase. Sneaking out to parties and getting real creative with how she snuck out, at one point recording an entire cassette tape of her seemingly studying (The sounds of pages turning, pencils on paper etc.) and setting that to play on loop while she was out so it sounded like she was still in her room.
She was known around town for her rebelliousness and ditching her police father to go to parties, so she was invited to the little get together Steve was having at his place (Season 1) as, one, she was a good friend of Nancy and Barb, and two, they knew for a fact she wouldn't rat them out for drinking, even though she herself didn't participate (she did cheer them on during the drinking stuff they were doing).
She helped Nancy search for Barb when she went missing, and that's sort of how she got dragged into the mess that she would now be stuck being a part of from that point onwards.
In 1985 she worked in the mall, in a small music store they had in there, though she would often meet up with Steve, who she had been friends with for a year at this point. Through him she met and befriended Robin. The pair, along with Dustin, dragged Marcy into the situation with the Russians.
By 1986 she was used to the mayhem brought by the upside down and so she helped out the others when they and Eddie went to the upside down to find Vecna.
