Animals, they are said to have a deeper understanding than any other species. Maybe that's why I love them so much. They don't judge me, they don't pity me, and they love unconditionally.
Chapter 4
After my run, I get back to my room at around 12:00am. That was a five hour run.
I take a quick shower and get changed into my black jean shorts and white t-shirt. I grab my vans and run upstairs.
Right before I step on the top stair, I put my shoes on the bottom stair, so my mom doesn't see it.
I walk to my moms bedroom door and knock lightly.
I hear a grumble on the other side but other than that nothing.
I knock lightly again.
"What!?" My mom yells from inside.
I cringe. "Uhm, um, I was just wondering...." I don't know if I should finish that sentence.
"Well? Spit it out child! I was sleeping!" My mother shouts behind the closed door.
"Umm, well you know I volunteered at the shelter this summer? I asked you beforehand. But uhm... I'm suppose to go in today...... Umm could I take the car?" I stutter.
No response.
I sigh in defeat and start walking back downstairs, until I hear a string of curses.
"Fine! But I'm trusting you this one time Nicole! If anything happens to my car, you will pay." She threatens.
I internally squeal and jump around. "Thank you mom! I'll be back in a couple hours!" I reply back and run to get my shoes.
After tying my shoes on, I walk to the front door and grab the keys for the car that are hanging by the front door.
My mother owns a white Mercedes. I absolutely love this car!
I walk around to the drivers side and unlock the door from the button on the keys. When I hop into the car, I start the engine. It purrs to life.
***************************
The shelter was right on Main Street. It was my favorite place to go. And I volunteered almost every summer.
I park the car by the front and hop out. After locking the car I walk around to the back of the shelter, which holds all the dogs.
This shelter is the only one in town, so it's always crowed with animals. But everyone who works here loves them like a family.
The shelter itself isn't that big. But it works. In the back holds all the kennels for the dogs, we have about 50 in right now. And when you walk inside there's all the cat kennels, we have about 33 in right now.
I walk through all the dogs greeting them as I pass. I stop by the door to a smaller kennel. This one holds a black lab puppy, only a couple months old. Someone abandoned her before they moved away. She was currently lying in a ball in the corner of the kennel. We haven't named her yet, so I greeted her by holding out my hand and saying "Hi puppy."
She perked up and came trotting over to my hand. I loved this one. She was just to cute.
I laughed as she started licking my arm all the way.
"I'll be back pretty girl." I stood up and walked through the back door.
"Nicole! Thank god your here! We're so full! I'm surprised we're even passing by right now!" Karen explains.
Karen is the shelter's director, she's a awesome person, she's in her 20s blonde hair blue eyes and average height, and a huge love for animals.
