Ryan was frozen in place. He couldn't move his body nor could he speak. That was until his father shouts at him.
"Ryan! Who in gods name is Sebastian!" His father demanded, his voice louder and more forceful.
Ryan stutters "Uh-uhm. H-he's-"
"Ryan, stop stumbling over your words and tell me who he is and why he is sending you these letters!" his father interrupted again, his tone sharper and his eyes narrowing. He balled his hand into a tight fist, and the paper he was holding crumpled slightly under the pressure.
Ryan's eyes widens and he runs to his father and takes it and wrings it out. "Father please be careful with these!" He exclaims with urgency "These are special." His eyes soften and a small smile formed on his face.
His father however, didn't care about what Ryan said. He walks to him and snatches the parchment. "Ryan, who is Sebastian? I will not ask again!" he demanded, his voice more commanding and filled with impatience.
Ryan turns to face him and puts his arms out "Okay, okay!" He sighs "Sebastian," he pauses "Sebastian is a man I met a week ago. And I have fallen in love with him."
His father's face turns into confusion mixed with anger. "What do you mean you've fallen in love with him? You cannot do that. You are a man. A man who is destined to marry a woman!"
"What do you know!" Ryan shouts "What do you know about love? Who says it is only between a man and a woman?"
"The whole world Ryan!" His father shouts back "And you met him a week ago? You can't fall in love with someone that quickly!"
"But I did!" Ryan retorted, his voice rising with defense "He had made me fallen for him from just his beautiful words and gently touch. He has pulled emotions from out of me that I did know I had!"
"Ryan you're speaking nonsense," his father shouts sternly "You're too young to understand what real love is!"
"I am 19 years old, I am old enough to understand what love is! And Sebastian is love!"
"He is not!" His father sternly says "Love is between a man and a woman. You are a man and you need a woman!"
"I do not!" Ryan shouted back, his voice mixed with pain and anger.
"You know what, I am tired of bickering. I am forbidding you from ever seeing him again!" his father declared, his voice filled with finality.
Ryan's eyebrows furrowed in disbelief and anger. "You can't do that!" he protested, his voice rising in defiance. The very idea of being forced to stay away from Sebastian was unbearable.
"Yes I can!" The king shouts "And if I ever see you two with one another again, his head will be mine and you'll spend the rest of your days in the north tower!"
"But father—" Ryan began, desperate to plead his case, but his father cut him off sharply.
"I do not want to hear it!" He throws down the paper and walks out his room and slams the door.
Tears forms in Ryan's eyes and he clutches his hands in anger as he falls to his knees crying. He cries angrily and he looks at the paper his father threw to the ground.
He reached over and picked it up, smoothing out the creases with trembling hands. As he began to read the letter, a small smile crept onto his face despite the tears streaming down his cheeks. The words from Sebastian brought him a sense of comfort and warmth, making him feel less alone.
Ryan paused for a moment, deep in thought. He had always followed his father's rules without question, but this time was different. This was something he couldn't just let go.
