Nick's POV
Sleeping without Kei is hard.It must be the size of the bed or possibly how cold it feels tonight. I'm thinking about her. I wonder why she hasn't called since we spoke or what could be possibly going on in her mind. After all this is over, in going to seriously focus on her. I'll reunite my family.
"Nick." Julio called my attention. He is standing at the open bedroom door. "Sorry to wake you."
"It's cool. I wasn't asleep."
"Someone is at the door."
"At this hour?" I glanced at the little clock on the bedside table. It's almost two in the morning. "Who is it?"
"Police."
The last thing I need.
I got out of bed to attend to the matter. When I opened the door something looked different. It's not just Olivia and Nilson. There are two officers in the driveway and two police cars.
"What is this?" I asked them. "You are harassing me."
"We need you to come with us."
"Why would I do that?" I asked them.
They looked at each other. "We need you to walk us through the night Detective Brian Lance was killed."
Shit.
"Let me guess, this is not an invitation I can decline."
"No." She answered.
"I will get dressed." I tried to close the door but Nilson put his foot on place.
"I think I'll accompany you."
"Shoes off." I told him.
"Why?"
"It's a house rule."
He complied.
He followed me in. Julio is completely out of sight. It's hard to even believe there's someone else in the house. He followed me all the way upstairs to the walk in closet. "Don't touch anything." I warned him.
He waited as I pulled on a pair of pants and a sweater. I picked some shoes and carried them with me, choosing to put them on at the front door.
"You can go with the officers-"
"I'll drive myself." I told Olivia. "Unless you want to slap some shiny cuffs on me..." I offered her my wrists.
When she didn't, I realized that I'm not under arrest. I drove away in my new escalade and they followed. I wonder if they got Katya too.
I called Tony. Someone has to know where I'm headed. I also need a criminal lawyer. Katya is not an option.
"Pick up kid." I mattered to myself with my eyes steadily looking back at the police cars trailing me. The other one is ahead of me. I'm sandwiched in between.
There's no response from Tony. Bruce is the next best thing. He answered immediately.
"Yeah?" There's music in the background. He must be at one of his clubs.
"Buddy, I'm headed down to the precinct."
"Why?"
"The cops want to talk about the death of the detective, Lance."
Bruce knows better than to ask me anything else.
"On my way."
"I need a lawyer just in case."
"Got you buddy." He hanged up.
As soon as I arrived, they were outside my car door. Should I tell Kei? I don't want to worry her. I got out of the car and followed them inside. I know this place a little too well. I should really stop being a visitor.
