"You sure you want to do this?"
I looked over to Harper who was sitting in the chair beside my hospital bed. "Yeah, I'm sure. I need to know."
After Harper made me accept the fact that I could be pregnant, we spent the night crying and trying to decide if I wanted to pee on a stick or not.
She offered to go out and get me a test, but I told her I preferred to get a blood test from a doctor. I had a pregnancy scare once with Adam and it was terrible. I bought the test, peed on the sick, waited three minutes, and it came back positive. When I told Adam. . . he didn't take it well. Horribly. actually. Then I found out it was a false positive. I wasn't taking any chances this time.
Once I woke up this morning, I decided to go to the hospital to get checked. I needed to know for sure if I was pregnant. If I was, then I would take it from there.
"What are you going to do if you are pregnant?" She asked quietly.
God, what was I going to do? My entire life was going to change. "I don't know. I mean, of course I'm going to keep the baby." I covered my face. "Christ, that sounded weird."
Harper laughed lightly. "Are you going to tell him?"
Him, meant Ayden. I haven't been with anyone else since Adam. If I was pregnant, Ayden was definitely the dad. No way it was anyone else's baby.
I turned towards her and the paper dress the nurse gave me shifted with my movements. "I feel like I should. I know he has a lot to worry about over there, but he has a right to know."
"I agree," Harper replied. "I know it's scary, but its kind of exciting."
"Excuse me?"
Her smile was full of excitement. "Think about it. Out of you, me, Danielle and Jamie, this would be the first baby."
Wow, she was right. That thought alone was enough to make me crazy. And nauseous. None of us had a baby. We didn't know how to do this.
The door to my hospital room opened and a tall, older, brunette woman walked in. Her white coat and stethoscope told me she was the doctor.
"Hi, there." She walked over to a computer and typed something in before looking at me. "You must be Lanie Jenkins. I'm Dr. Shepherd."
I shook her hand and gave her an awkward smile. "It's nice to meet you." I gestured to Harper. "This is my friend. She's here for moral support."
Dr. Shephard laughed before she put the earpieces of her stethoscope in her ears and placed the other end on my chest. "Take the deep breath for me."
I did as she said multiple times while she moved the round metal piece over my back and chest.
"Everything sounds good. Now, let's get right to it. You came here to see if you were pregnant. We did a blood draw and the results of your HcG levels shows you're just shy of six weeks. You are definitely pregnant."
The doctor kept talking but I couldn't hear anything. There was a ringing noise that drowned everything else out. I was pregnant. There was a baby growing inside of me right now. Fuckkk. What was I going to do?
"Ms. Jenkins?" By the doctor's tone, she has probably been saying my name for awhile.
"Sorry, what did you say?"
Her smile warm and her tone was patient. She probably dealt with this a lot. "I asked if the father was involved, and if you had an OB-GYN."
I glanced from Harper to the doctor. "Um, the father is-- he's, um, in the service. He's overseas."
