We continued to linger in the boring party, making small talk and occasionally sipping on our drinks. Suddenly, we were approached by another beautiful woman.
"Hey, Brother Ame come dance with me," she asked with a playful smile.
Well, then, I thought to myself, maybe I can go out now and get some fresh air.
Ame smiled at her, but his response surprised me. "Thank you for asking, but I have a date. I wouldn't be much of a man if I left her alone now, would I?"
"Wow, this is the first time I've seen you bringing a woman," she said, giving him a teasing smile.
"Dr. Yang! Don't embarrass me in front of her!" Ame said, his cheeks reddening slightly.
"Fine, I'll leave you be, Brother Ame. Or should I just call you Dr. Suting?" she said, leaving behind a soft fragrance of lavender as she walked away.
"You could have just gone with her. I don't really care," I said.
"I was the one who asked you on a date. It would be awfully rude of me to leave you alone, especially since people here, particularly the older ones, can be super judgmental," he said, looking at me with a small smile.
Why is he being such a gentleman today? He's usually always a womanizer, calling me weird romantic names and flirting with me incessantly.
"You must be tired. Let's go out to the balcony," he suggested.
We stood on the balcony, the cold winter breeze hitting my skin. Good thing I wore a shawl. The stars were twinkling above us, and the city lights below created a picturesque scene. It was almost easy to forget the chaotic and often dark twists my life had taken recently.
Suddenly, we heard a sob nearby. Ame immediately got up to see who it was, and I followed him. We found a young woman crouched up in the corner, looking younger than me. She had thick glasses and acne, the typical struggles of a teenager.
"Sara, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" he asked, his voice gentle and concerned.
"It's just that I look awful, and I'm so embarrassed for coming here," she said, sniffling.
"Awful? Who are you talking about? All I see a young woman who's not only smart but also very beautiful. That dress looks stunning on you, Sara," he said, kneeling beside her.
"Now, get up. The only thing that makes you ugly are those tears. A young, beautiful woman like you should be smiling," he said, making her smile a bit through her tears.
Wow, he's being awfully sweet. It honestly feels strange to see this side of him.
"Thank you, but I'm scared," she said, her voice trembling.
"If anyone says anything bad to you, just remember that you're the youngest person to get recruited here. You're going to be way better than them. I assure you, it’ll hurt their pride more than anything," he said, his voice full of encouragement. She smiled more confidently.
"Don't let anybody drag you down. You're a beautiful queen, you go girl," he said, making her laugh as she wiped her tears and stood up.
I watched her leave, still surprised at Ame's tender side.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked, noticing my expression.
"What happened to Dr. Suting, and what did you do to him?" I asked, half-joking but genuinely curious.
"That's awfully mean!" he said, pretending to be offended.
"It's me, Y/n. You just don’t know me as much as you think you do. People are more complex than how you perceive them," he said, sounding almost as if he were reading my thoughts.
