I looked up, and there he was—Hame, my childhood friend, huffing heavily. Had he run all the way here?
"Idiot, why are you sitting here in the cold?" he said, pouting with his face flushed from the chill.
"I was thinking. Why are you here?" I asked. He smiled, his breath visible in the frigid air.
"You told me the other day that you were coming home today. So, I remembered and waited here for hours. When I couldn't find you, I went back home for a while and then came back," he explained.
"I'm sorry for making you wait so long. You wouldn't pick up your phone, you see," he added.
"Why did you do that? You wasted your time needlessly waiting in the cold," I said. He folded his arms and stared at me with intense eyes.
"Ungrateful brat. Are you seriously planning on living on the streets for the rest of your winter break? You're coming home with me. My mom is waiting for us," he said firmly.
"I never asked you to come pick me up, nor do I want to impose on you or your family," I replied, remaining seated on the bench. Seeing happy families only reminded me of how bad my relationship with my father was. I figured I'd stay in a hotel until I could find a temporary place. I hated asking for help.
Hame's expression softened, a mix of frustration and sympathy. Did I really look like some kind of pitiful puppy out in the cold?
"Thanks for the offer, but I'm fine. I'm not going," I said stubbornly.
"Little brat!" he exclaimed, clearly annoyed. He grabbed my hand and pulled me up with unexpected force.
"Hey, when did you become so strong?" I asked, surprised. He had been as weak as a twig when we were younger.
"I've been exercising," he said shortly.
"Hey, let me go! I don't want to go to your home," I protested.
"I know how stubborn you are. If I left you alone, I know you'd rather freeze to death," he said, his frustration evident. "Good lord, Y/N, why can't you just accept help once in a while? Everyone needs help sometimes."
It seemed clear that Hame wasn't going to let me go. Why did I even tell him I was coming home today?
I looked at him, noting his determination, but there was also a hint of frustration on his face. He pulled me along through the busy streets, where cars honked and people rushed by. The sleet continued, making it colder by the minute.
"I understand why you don't like asking for help," he said as we walked. "But you keep forgetting that you're not completely alone. You have me, and it's okay to accept my help once in a while."
"Let me be your friend for once, rather than just an acquaintance," he added, his face blushing, probably from the cold. Despite his annoyance, he still cared.
We walked in the cold silence, holding hands.
"You can let go of my hand, you know. I'm not going to run away," I said.
"I don't trust you not to," he replied. I smirked at him.
"Smart choice," I said.
Before long, we reached his family home. I took a deep breath, realizing I hadn't seen his family in a while.
"Mom, we're here," he announced.
A young-looking woman emerged from the door.
"My, my, it's been a while, hasn't it, Y/N?" she said cheerfully. His mother still looked so young; if I didn't know any better, I might think she was his sister.
