I couldn't bring myself to go home just yet. Instead, I decided to roam around the city aimlessly until dusk began to settle. The city buzzed with life, its busy streets filled with people who seemed to have purpose, unlike me. I found a bench and sat down, watching the world move past me. The lights from the shops and street lamps cast a warm glow on the pavement, contrasting sharply with the cold feeling inside me.
I wondered if my family was better off without me. They must have enjoyed life more without an outsider like me constantly around. My presence had always felt like an intrusion, a reminder of something that didn’t quite fit. They probably had a great time without me.
The temperature began to drop, and the chill seeped into my bones. It was getting colder, so I decided it was best to find a hotel room for the night. As I walked silently towards the nearest hotel. My legs carried me almost mechanically, my mind numb.
Then, my heart skipped a beat. I saw her, the one person I didn’t want to see. My eyes widened, and my breathing quickened. I subconsciously covered myself, trying to shield my body from the world.
“El… Elise,” I whispered, barely audible.
“Luka!” she exclaimed, rushing towards me. She tackled me into a hug, burying her face in my chest. My heart raced even faster, triggering a deep sense of panic within me.
“I miss you so much, Luka. Why don’t you ever visit me even though we study in the same city?” she asked, her voice muffled against my chest.
“I… I… I just couldn’t find you,” I stammered, the words sticking in my throat.
“Hey, Luka, why don’t we go to my house tonight? No one is home,” she said, looking up at me with a big smile.
I clutched my bag harder, the fear rising inside me. I couldn’t bring myself to say no.
“Okay,” I said softly, my voice trembling. I was shaking uncontrollably.
As we walked to her home, she broke the silence. “Hey, who was that girl who was with you when we met that day?” she asked, her voice sweet and soft.
“She’s my… we’re in the same program. That’s how I know her,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
“I see!” she said cheerfully, grabbing my hand. I didn’t respond nor did I reject her touch. I could never reject anyone; I was too afraid to do so.
We arrived at her home, and she locked the door behind us. She looked at me intensely, making my heart race as I instinctively covered myself. The night stretched on, feeling interminable. It wasn’t as bad as I remembered, but the sense of unease never left me.
The morning finally came, and I woke up, still feeling exhausted despite having slept. I stared at the ceiling, my eyes empty and tired. I felt pathetic and hollow, as always. I knew I should go home; my family would be worried. I carefully got out of bed, looking back at Elise for a moment.
I sighed, dressed, and left quietly. Holding my bag tightly, I walked down the silent streets. It was still very early, and the world felt like it was holding its breath.
As I thought about last night, I tried to convince myself it wasn’t as bad as I had feared. But my hands were shaking, my body trembling. I clung to my jacket as if afraid the wind would blow it away, exposing me to the world. Why was I feeling like this? I had done this countless times, yet it never stopped bothering me. I felt weak and cowardly.
My thoughts raced as I continue to tremble, I don't understand why this effect me so much? I began scratching myself. Why do I always act this way when I meet Elise? She had always been nice to me. I really am a coward unworthy to call myself a man. I'm just a little boy afraid of a young beautiful woman who's only been nice to me.
