Billie povAs we arrived at my parents' house, I got out of the car and walked over to help Dani, despite her protests about wanting to be independent. After a brief struggle, she relented, and I gently helped her out of the car, her belly making it a bit more challenging to move around comfortably.
"I can get myself out of the car, you know," Dani said, a hint of playful annoyance in her voice.
"Stop trying to be so independent and let me help you," I replied with a grin before turning to unbuckle Chloe from her seat.
As soon as Chloe was free, she bolted out of the car and sprinted towards the front door. "GRANDMA, GRANDPA!" she yelled, her voice echoing through the quiet neighborhood as she panted out of breath and knocked on the door with all her might.
"Hold on, Chloe, I have a key," I said, hurrying after her with a laugh.
The door swung open, and my mom stood there, her face lighting up with joy at the sight of her granddaughter. "Chloe!"
"Grandma, I missed you!" Chloe said, wrapping her small arms tightly around her neck.
"We missed you too, sweetheart," my mom replied, kissing Chloe's cheek before setting her down. "Come on in! Everyone's in the backyard, waiting to see you. Grandpa is barbecuing."
"UNCLE FINN! UNCLE FINN!" Chloe screamed, running through the house and making a beeline for the back patio.
Dani chuckled beside me. "She's gonna sleep so good tonight," she said under her breath, her voice tinged with amusement and relief.
I smiled at Dani. "I hope so. She's been bouncing off the walls all day."
As we made our way through the house, I took in the familiar sights and smells that brought back so many memories. Family photos lined the walls, and the scent of my dad's famous barbecue sauce wafted through the air. The sounds of laughter and chatter drifted in from the backyard, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
When we stepped onto the patio, we were greeted by the sight of my dad expertly manning the grill, flipping burgers, and turning hot dogs with practiced ease. My brother Finn was lounging in a chair, a cold drink in hand, looking every bit the relaxed uncle.
His girlfriend, Claudia, sat beside him with a glass of lemonade, mingling with my dad. Who knows what he was talking their ear off about, but it seemed like they all were enjoying themselves.
"Hey, look who finally made it!" Finn called out, lifting his drink in a toast to our arrival.
"Yeah, we thought you'd get here before the sun went down," Claudia added with a teasing smile.
"It was her," I said, nodding towards Chloe, who was still bouncing with excitement. "She had a practice that ran a bit late."
"UNCLE FINN! CLAUDIA!" Chloe yelled, sprinting across the patio and launching herself into Finn's arms. He caught her with a grunt, laughing.
"Whoa! You're getting heavy," Finn said, pretending to struggle under her weight.
"Yeah, and stronger too!" Chloe flexed her little arms, making everyone laugh.
Claudia reached over and fixing Chloe's beanie. "You're growing up so fast, Chloe. Pretty soon you'll be taller than your Uncle Finn.
"I hope not," Finn groaned, still playfully holding Chloe. "stay small."
My dad turned from the grill, his face lighting up with a broad smile. "Billie, Dani! Glad you could make it. Food's almost ready."
"Thanks, Dad," I said, giving him a quick hug. "It smells amazing."
