As Billie's tour was winding down, my focus shifted towards preparing for the baby's arrival. Weekends were now spent scouring Target's newborn and infant aisles, stocking up on essentials like diapers and wipes. The nursery was already set up, adorned with soft tan colors and cozy blankets, waiting patiently for its tiny occupant.
Amidst the anticipation of motherhood, another idea began to take root in my mind—a dream of creating my own business. With a strong clientele base already established, I knew that venturing out on my own was not only feasible but also potentially rewarding. The vision was clear: a firm led by black women accountants, empowering each other and their clients with financial expertise.
Yet, the impending arrival of the baby posed a significant challenge. Balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship seemed daunting, but it didn't deter me from exploring the possibilities. I spent countless hours planning and strategizing, envisioning a future where my business thrived and made a positive impact in the community.
Gathering a group of like-minded black women in the field, I pitched them the idea of joining forces to create something truly impactful. The response was overwhelmingly positive, fueling my determination to turn this dream into reality. Alongside building the business, I envisioned a mentorship program aimed at empowering young black girls with financial literacy skills, ensuring they had the tools to navigate their financial futures.
With the encouragement of my friends and the support of my growing network, I took the first steps towards making my dream a tangible reality. Meetings were scheduled, plans were drafted, and the process of obtaining my LLC began—a crucial step in protecting my business idea and establishing it as my own.
Reflecting on the journey thus far, I couldn't help but acknowledge the role that recent events had played in shaping my newfound focus. Billie's absence, coupled with the end of my relationship with Adri, had provided me with the clarity and space to prioritize myself and my goals. Instead of being consumed by external distractions, I was now channeling my energy towards building a future filled with purpose and possibility.
"Don't worry about anything, China and I will be there for you no matter what. If you want to start the business now, I say go for it. Don't let the baby stop you from doing something great, especially if we're offering you support," her voice carried a sense of genuine encouragement, giving me the emotional push I needed.
"Thank you," I replied softly, the gratitude swelling within me as we ended the short phone call. With a sigh, I turned the radio up, seeking solace in the familiar melodies as I navigated through the bustling streets of the city.
"Now coming up, Billie Eilish joined EP with a new girl on the scene who goes by Naira. Rumors have been going on around the two for quite some time with the two being caught on tour together," the radio announcer's voice filled the car, drawing my attention to the mention of Billie's name.
"Or it could all just be a marketing stunt," the other newscaster added cynically. "Billie has been M.I.A since she and her ex-fiance broke things off. Two years since she dropped music and over six months since she's been active on social media," the other broadcaster chimed in, their words painting a picture of Billie's absence from the spotlight.
I felt a pang of discomfort gnawing at my chest as the radio continued to discuss Billie's whereabouts and recent endeavors. Despite my best efforts to distance myself from the celebrity world, Billie's presence seemed to permeate every aspect of my life, a constant reminder of the past we shared.
