"Thanks for coming... I wasn't actually expecting you to take my offer" Satoru says as Nanami pushes back his glasses and sighs.

"I had no intentions of coming, it's just..." Nanami hesitates, he doesn't want to admit that the main reason he is here is because he missed Satoru and Shoko. He couldn't say that. He was the one who turned his back against them after Haibara's death. He was the one who decided to part ways.

It was pure coincidence that the day he actually decided to part his ways, he met Geto. It was pure coincidence but it was already known that Geto had betrayed the police. He has betrayed the people he grew up with. He has turned against them. Nanami felt a growing rage within him when he saw his face.

Geto wasn't at all shocked to see him. In fact, he was rather very calm. He smiled at Nanami like there was nothing wrong. And when Nanami approached to arrest him. He didn't resist either.

He still doesn't understand why Geto lied to Satoru about Nanami making efforts to arrest him. Yet Nanami stayed quiet.

"Why did you do that Suguru?"

Nanami remembers asking him the instant he laid his eyes on him. Geto smiled and stared at him before letting out a chuckle.

"If you want justice, you have to turn towards injustice first..."

Was the only answer Geto gave. Nanami thought of it day and night yet couldn't understand.

How can justice be served with injustice?

Yet Nanami had no courage to ask.

Today, however, he was gonna ask. He has it enough. He has been tormented enough. Bidding farewell to Shoko, Satoru, and Utahime, he turns to leave towards the police station. His mind was completely occupied with possible answers he could receive from Geto.

Even though his face stayed stoic, his insides were turning upside down.

His feet halt in front of the police station as he stares at the main gate. Geto was still imprisoned inside of it. He couldn't help but wonder how hard it must've been for Satoru to work here and bear the torment of his lover behind those bars.

What if he was in Satoru's shoes and the one behind the bars was...

Haibara...

No...

He shakes his head and sighs before making his way inside the station. Upon his entry, the officers instantly recognize him and stand up to bow, Nanami nods a greeting to everyone before making his way towards cells.

Geto was confined to a much secure cell in case he tried to escape.

"Oh! Greetings Sir Nanami!" The young officer stands up and bows. Nanami nods.

"I am here to see Suguru," He says as the officer widens his eyes. He hadn't expected Nanami to come visit Geto who he has himself caught. Yet he had no authority to stop Nanami. Even though he resigned, Nanami had a status in the station.

Everyone had great respect for this man. With a nod, the boy guided Nanami towards Geto's cell which was in deep end. It was isolated so far from the corner to ensure he had no contact.

Nanami stands in front of the cell and nods towards the officer, the young boy presents him with a small smile and leaves Nanami all alone standing in front of the dark cell. The cell had a small lamp which was there for Geto who requested to have some light since he reads books that were provided to him to keep him busy.

Nanami's eyes land on Geto who is sitting under the lamp with his eyes focused on the book. His face hadn't changed a bit, he was still handsome as he was when they were teens. His hair was the only thing that had changed in him. They were now much longer.

Geto had them tied up in a bun as he was fully engrossed in the book.

"You're gonna burn a hole in me at this point" Geto's now much deeper voice finally breaks the silence. He doesn't even lift his eyes from the book.

"I want to ask you something"

"Mhm, I am all ears" His voice was so indifferent. It was like he was in his bedroom and Nanami had come in to disturb his reading time. With his eyes still on the book, he waits for Nanami to ask whatever it is.

"What did you mean when you said 'If you want justice, you have to turn towards injustice first...'" Nanami asks, Geto finally lifts his eyes from the book and looks at Nanami. His eyes were so empty and hollow. The light that once shone in them was long gone. Geto sets the book down and stands up from his bed before making his way towards Nanami. Geto's wrists and ankles were chained with cuffs thus he couldn't really escape the cell even if he wanted to.

His limitations were till the bars.

His pale fingers wrap around the bars as he stares at Nanami. His eyes wander like he is pondering about what he should answer with.

"When did I say that?" He asks, Nanami looks at him and narrows his eyes.

"The very day I arrested you"

"Oh." Like realization hits Geto. He blinks and then smiles.

"I don't know what I meant back then" Nanami sighed at his response. He knew it wouldn't be easy.

"Stop playing around Suguru, I am serious"

"Stop calling me Suguru, I am serious" Geto's voice drops octaves. Nanami halts and looks at Geto. His eyes held an emotion Nanami couldn't distinguish.

What was it?

Was it anger?

Was it pain?

What changed?

"Answer me, Su-... Geto..." Nanami sighs.

"If you can go back in time, would you take the bullets inside of Haibara?" Geto's question was like an arrow to his heart. Nanami's heart skips a beat, his hands still as his eyes grow wide. He lifts his head to look at Geto who stares at him with his dull eyes.

"Tell me Nanami Kento. Would you take the bullets for Yu Haibara?" Nanami feels the world around him still.

Yes yes yes.

He would.

If he could go back.

He would push Haibara back.

He would make sure Haibara doesn't stand in front of him.

He would make sure before dying that Haibara is safe and sound.

"Yes."

"What if... instead of chasing behind the criminal, you guys would've asked him why he chose the path he was on? He wouldn't have shot Haibara, neither would he have died too" Geto says as Nanami widens his eyes.

"Are you out of your mind?! How could I ask him that?" Geto smiles and shrugs.

"Maybe just the way I asked," Nanami furrows his brows as he stares at Geto.

"What do you mean?"

"Kai Asahi... the man who was arrested on accusations of murdering his family..." Geto recalls the conversation he once had with that guy. Nanami widens his eyes.

"Satoru later on proved him innocent after capturing his twin brother" Nanami slowly recalls the events from long ago. He was the one who arrested Asahi along with Satoru.

"Hah... I wonder what went wrong for him to take the step of murdering his brother's family... but was he actually wrong? He only repaid what he received. He never would've done it if-"

"You're saying he is right?! Even after he is the reason behind Haibara's death!?" Nanami flew in rage. He stopped losing his composure a long time ago but a mere mention of Haibara breaks down Nanami's world.

Geto looks at him and smiles.

"He was right to kill his brother's family, he was wrong to kill your only family"
