CHAPTER TWENTY: THE LOSS OF LOVED ONES

"She doesn't believe me," John B spoke, breaking the silence once his sister was out of view. They would've drove after her, but the Routledge boy needed to go to the police station. He needed to report to the cops who killed Sheriff Susan. It wasn't John B. It could never be him. Rafe Cameron shot her in cold blood, in front of him and Sarah. "She actually thinks I did it." He added in an incredulous tone.

"I think she's just shocked." Kiara replied, her fingers drumming over the steering wheel.

"Shocked? No, Kie. That bastard lied to her, I bet he did." JJ shook his head with frustration, speaking from in the backseat next to Pope.

"Rafe?" John B inquired, turning his full attention to JJ now. Now, he wasn't just resentful that his sister was dating the enemy. He was resentful that she believed her boyfriend over him—over her own brother.

"Who else would it be?" Pope spoke, just as angry. He took another inhale from the joint, but let out a few violent coughs, earning concerned looks from his friends.

"Easy there, chief," JJ patted his back while he coughed. "Damn."

"Why does she believe him?" John B questioned again, leaning his head on the headrest of the seat while he let out a breath.

"Rafe got into her head." Pope sounded very irritated which was unusual for him. He was usually the calm friend, or at least the logical one. However, right now, he looked about ready to punch the glass of the window next to him.

All John B wanted was Emma to be on his side. He wanted her to believe him. She was his only family left, and instead of siding with him, she sided with a murderer. His own sister didn't believe him. She trusted her boyfriend instead. The same boy who just shot the Sheriff and lied to her about it, framing him instead of taking the blame. It hurt him a lot when the realization struck him. But then, he became more aware that he couldn't focus on that aspect right now. He had a job to do. To tell the cops who really killed the Sheriff, to tell them the truth for once in his life.

JJ noticed the look his best friend had in his eyes. That determined yet anxious look. He sighed and leaned forward, placing a hand on his arm. "Are you sure you wanna do this? I'm just gon' be real with you right now. You might end up in the lion's den, but you don't go there on purpose. It's fundamental. You should never, ever, trust cops, no matter what the circumstance is."

"I agree with JJ. Fuck the police." Pope added, his tone remaining aggressive.

"You going to the dark side now?" Kiara gave him an incredulous look.
