Nayla's POV
I woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside, a welcome change from the usual blare of my alarm. Careful not to disturb Billie, who was still fast asleep in her room, I quietly got ready for the day.
After a quick shower, I headed to the kitchen, craving the warmth of a hearty breakfast. I decided to whip up some oatmeal, adding a splash of almond milk and a handful of berries for flavor. While the oatmeal cooked, I brewed a pot of coffee, the rich aroma filling the kitchen.
Sitting down at the table, I enjoyed my breakfast in solitude, the only sound being the soft hum of the coffee machine. I made sure to prepare a bowl of oatmeal for Billie, knowing she would appreciate it whenever she decided to join me.
The previous night had been a simple yet cozy affair. After dinner, which consisted of a light salad and some grilled vegetables, Billie and I had engaged in easy conversation over a glass of wine. The soft glow of the living room lamps had created a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day. Eventually, as the hours passed and fatigue set in, Billie had retired to her room for some well-deserved rest.
Lost in my thoughts, I barely noticed the time passing until I heard Billie's footsteps entering the living room. She looked refreshed, with a slight smile on her face as she greeted me.
"Morning! How'd you sleep?"
"Pretty good, thanks. I fell asleep as soon as I laid down."
"Glad to hear that! Breakfast's ready if you're hungry. I made some oats."
"You didn't have to do that, Nayla."
"I know, but hey, consider it my rent payment for crashing at your place." I chuckled.
"Hey Nayla, got anything planned for today?" Billie's voice broke through the silence after she finished eating, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I looked up from my book, surprised by the question. "Just finishing up a poster for school," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "It's not too exciting, but it needs to be done."
Billie nodded, pouring herself a cup of coffee. "Mind if I join? I'm completely free today, and I could use a little creative distraction."
My heart skipped a beat at her offer. Billie Eilish, helping me with my work stuff? Hold on, it's past that for a while now. I literally live in her place. "Really? You'd help me with this?" I asked, trying to hide my excitement.
"Of course!" Billie replied with a grin.
I couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. "Alright then, welcome to poster-making 101. Let's get started!" I almost yelled and ran to my room to bring all of my stuff.
As we worked on the poster, Billie's curiosity got the best of her, and she began asking me questions about my life back home.
"So, Nayla, do you have any siblings?" Billie inquired, her tone casual as she carefully cut out a piece of construction paper.
I shook my head, a wistful smile tugging at my lips. "No, I'm an only child. It's always been just me and my mom. I grew up with her after my parents got divorced."
Billie glanced up from her work, her expression softening with empathy. "I'm sorry to hear that. How was it growing up with just your mom?"
"It had its challenges," I admitted, a bittersweet smile tugging at my lips. "My mom did her best to provide for us, but it wasn't always easy. We didn't always see eye to eye, but we love each other in our own way."
Billie nodded, her gaze thoughtful. "Must have been tough."
"It had its moments," I agreed, the memories flooding back. "But we managed. And I think it made us stronger in the end."
