Fake grass rustled in an invisible breeze. Trees and playgrounds were scattered across the small area, and a sign covered an archway leading into a shadowy room.
The sign read 'Do Not Enter: Under Construction.' But to the problem of two six-year-old dragonets inside, they were too young to be able to read.
Two rainwing dragonets were a few meters in from the archway. Both were the same size, possibly being siblings.
The first, hanging further back, was a sky-blue male with purple markings. He had dark purple nightwing scales along his muzzle and black flecks across the underside of his wings, showing his obvious nightwing blood. The paler shape of a moon was on one cheek. Two bright emerald eyes flicked around the room nervously.
The second, leading the male behind her, was an amber female. sky-blue markings were dotted across her body, having the same flecked wings and dark blue bight scales as her brother. She also had bright green eyes. A golden circle was easily recognized on her own cheek.
The first dragonet lowered his small head. "Toucan..." He murmured, nervously looking behind them. "I don't think we should be here. I have a sick feeling in my belly. I think something's going to go wrong."
The female, Toucan, lifted her head and spread her wings. "Oh, come on, Blueberry! You're no fun sometimes." She said, twisting her neck to look at her brother. "Besides, even if they do find out, it's not like we'll get in trouble for not being able to read that spooky sign back there!"
Blueberry still couldn't flush out the pit of dread that had settled in his stomach. this place felt off. He didn't know why, but it just did.
He shook his head. As his sister said, he needed to stop worrying. Have some fun! He jumped forwards as his sister bounded to the edge of a deep, seemingly endless pit in the center.
Blueberry's ruff flicked backwards, turning a ghostly, pale green of fear.
"Toucan, this doesn't seem safe... that sign looks like it was there for a reason. The ball pit was replaced by a giant abyss!"
Toucan rolled her eyes as she looked back at him. "I have two things to say: One. Don't be such a scaredy cat! And two: How do you even know that word?" She said, lifting a talon to brush a cobweb off her shoulder. "How did you even say that? Abis- A-bees- abasis- Abasis! There, I got it."
Blueberry shook his head. "Toucan, we need to go!"
Toucan stretched out her wings before bouncing onto the wooden pathway that stretched across the pit. "Oh, Blueberry. See? I'm fine!" She started bouncing up and down on it, making it bend and creak from her weight. "Perfectly fine!"
Blueberry heard an ear-splitting crack. He looked down and saw the wood underneath Toucan's talons with a long, ragged mark across it. That definitely hadn't been there before.
Another crack was heard, bringing another long split across the wood. Toucan obviously hadn't heard them, because she continued bouncing across the wood.
"Toucan!" Blueberry screeched, leaping to the edge of the pit. "Get off!"
His scales turned pale with fear. His blood turned to ice as the wood beneath his sister split apart, leaving an empty hole where she could have- should have- stood.
Blueberry reached out a talon to try reach his sister- to pull her up, keep her alive somehow. But it was too late. His sister couldn't fly; neither could he, and she was too far to reach.
The last thing he heard from his sister was her shriek of terror before she vanished into the abyss, to never appear again.
Well, that was what Blueberry had thought. A few years was all the world needed to prove it's point.
