2019

AS MARLOWE MADE eye contact with Art, she felt her heart beat louder in her chest.

Just as quickly as their eyes met, they left each other again. Marlowe couldn't stand looking at him any longer as she knew she would do something that she would regret.

As she turned her head back to face Colton, the sadness in her eyes was evident.

"We can leave," Colton said softly, grabbing Marlowe's hand from over the table. "If you're feeling overwhelmed we can go."

Marlowe gripped Colton's hand harder and brought it up to her mouth. She placed three small kisses on the back of his hand and slowly nodded.

Colton smiled softly and reassuringly as he stood up and let go of her hand. Marlowe followed his actions and stood up too.

As she grabbed her handbag that lay on the table and spun around, she kept her eyes on the ground unwilling to look up in fear that Art would be looking right back at her.

That was what it always seemed to be. Marlowe would look up, and Art's eyes were already on her. It had always been like that.

She and Colton made their way to the elevator to go back up to their room, and just as the two doors opened and they stepped in, Art called out to Marlowe.

"Marlowe," Art's voice echoed across the hotel lobby. "Can we speak... please?"

The look of desperation in his eyes would've been enough for Marlowe to fold when she was a teenager, but Colton's hand squeezed hers three times and she was brought back to reality.

She wasn't a teenager anymore. Neither was Art. They were both in separate relationships, and Art had started a family. But maybe Marlowe needed that closure, and maybe Art did too.

"What is there to talk about, Art?" Colton asked, fed up with Art playing with Marlowe's emotions.

"Please, Marlowe." He begged, not even sparing a glance at Colton. "Look..." he started, "If you want to talk, I'll be waiting in that restaurant in 2 hours. Be there or don't." He pointed over to the hotel restaurant where Marlowe and Colton previously were.
