✮Written Review:
'Bay's Wish' is a novella written for the 2024 Wattpad ONC. It follows the death of a dog named Hugo as he attempts to help his master from beyond the grave in dog heaven. Along the way, Hugo learns what life is like without his master, yet at the same time eagerly anticipates the time they can be reunited.
I cannot say enough good things about this story. Often when I read, I find myself analyzing the text, looking for clues or hidden meanings to the author's intent. As an author myself, I crave feedback, desperate for a hint of self-reflection or improvement. I write in the margins, offering opinions, suggestions, and encouragement. However, this time I found myself sitting back in my chair just enjoying it for what it was: beautiful in its simplicity, yet strong against the tide pulling at my heartstrings. Three chapters in, I summoned the family dog, desperate for affection. By chapter six, I took a break to feed him some treats, feeling shame at having not paid more attention to him.
By chapter ten, I was a blubbering mess.
Finding myself in the wake of such a good story, I struggle to put words to the feelings welling up inside me, desperately wanting to say more than, "GO READ IT!" But those words are simple enough. Go read it. Go read about the dog that loved his human so much that he denied himself the pleasures of heaven just to bring her joy. Go read the story of love shared, just because the dog hated to see his human suffer. Go read the story of the human who loved despite knowing what she would lose. The love she wasn't willing to let suffer for her sake. The love she remembered even in her own death. If you can read this story and not come out of it having shed a tear, I doubt you are a dog person, or have a human soul.
Of course, the story isn't perfect. The writing, while beautiful, hints at inexperience. It very much has the feel of "A Dog's Purpose," and I would be very surprised if it wasn't at least inspired by it. It could benefit from a good line edit, but then again, what Wattpad book couldn't? However, these things should not deter any reader. Its tiny flaws don't even compared to this gem of a story found in the Wattpad dregs.
In the end, 'Bay's Wish' is a beautifully written novella that, despite its minor shortcomings, offers a heartwarming and emotional journey. If you love stories about the deep bond between pets and their owners, this one is definitely worth your time.
