Julia follows me as I step off the school bus. The door automatically closes behind us and bus drives away, disappearing into the long, vacant street.
I blithely stroll with her, watching the afternoon sky. I just love the calm feeling when nobody disturbs you from the thoughts and you are lost in your imagination. I feel fresh and invigorated.
We pass by several houses. The unique beauty clad every aspect, from the gleaming dustless windows to the intricate aesthetic designing of the wrought iron gate. From the fresh lawns that are watered almost every other day, to the handsome trees swaying in the spring wind. Plants by the fences are spotted with the red roses, jasmine, periwinkle, pink reddish immersing shade of carnation, and blue hydrangea.
As I get closer to my house, I stop myself from going any farther. I don't want to stay alone feeling desolated. I know my mom and dad will not be home to welcome me, but a loneliness would greet me as always.
"Can we go somewhere else?" I ask Julia.
"Where?" Julia says. There is no rush in her voice and her expression is neutral.
"I don't know. Just somewhere else. I don't wanna go home. It feels very quiet and scary."
I look at her face, wondering what she might be thinking.
"Can we just stay outside for few hours?" I insist her to give me an answer that I wish.
"How about we go to the neighborhood lake park? We can spend couple of hours there."
She says after thinking in silent seconds."Yeah, yeah that sounds good. Let's go there," I say, pushing her away from the homeward path and grimace at my house like it never maintains a good, happy life for me.
"Have you ever been there before?" Julia asks.
"Where?"
"To the park. It's one of the most beautiful park in the neighborhood."
"No I haven't been there. I am really excited to visit there for the first time." I embrace her arm and feel our friendship lasting for eternity. Without it, sometimes I think I wouldn't have ever found the true beauty of life. She has opened my eyes to see a whole different world, where I hang out by her, feel the sweet freedom, and wash away all the regrets and sadness.
"Not many people come there very often. That's the strange part," Julia changes her tone of the voice, sounding portentous.
I feel a crawling chill unleashing into my skin and I tighten my grasp over her arm. But I notice that it begins to irritate her a bit, so I unlock my arms around her.
"Why doesn't anyone come there?" I pose my question eagerly. My eyes wide over her face.
"I don't know. Maybe it's because people here have their own big backyards and lawns in which they can spend great time already. What other reason can it possibly be."
Julia is not wealthy as me. She belongs to a middle-class family, in which her father is an employee, earns an adequate wage and fulfills all the needs and small wishes of his children.
"What if the reason can be that unusual things happen like you know? Evil spirits live in places where not many people go," I say. I once read about it in the book about supernatural things and I don't know how I survived that night after reading it. I was supposed to turn on all the lights, close the windows and snatch the blankets up to my face. But surprisingly I reacted opposite."
