new years eve, 2023
Florentine arrived at the cafe she was going to meet her father at twenty minutes too early, blaming it on the fact she had nothing better to do at the hotel. She also underestimated how long it would take her to get there by foot, because she barely needed three minutes.
Now she was sat by a window with a glass of prosecco in her hand and a million thoughts going through her head. She wasn't actually planning on drinking this early into the day, considering the fact that she was invited to a party that night, but the drink was shoved into her hand by the waitress that seated her, leaving no room for declining the alcoholic beverage.
In some way the scenic view of the Monaco Yacht Club paired with the prosecco allowed Florentine to relax a little before she'd have to face the reason she was there in the first place.
There were thousands of things she wanted to say to her father regarding the night prior, but also dating back to when Florentine first moved out. Things that she was always afraid to talk about and she finally wanted to adress. When he finally arrived, ten minutes too late, her words had betrayed her.
He sat down in front of her wordlessly, sending the waitress that served him his own glass of prosecco a tight lipped smile, before he focused his attention on his daughter. He watched her as Florentine's eyes darted from one place to the other, trying to focus on anything other than the man opposite her and it pained him. Bastién was disheartened by the fact his daughter felt so uncomfortable in his present.
"Mon chou, look... I am aware we should've told you about it. I wanted to do what's best for both you and your mother, but thruthfully I didn't know what I could do. Your mother's been having a hard time lately", he started off, hoping for any kind of reaction from the girl, but her eyes stayed glued to the menue.
Bastién let out a sigh when he realized his daughter didn't want to talk to him, so he picked up his own menue, his eyes hardly scanning over the pages. The waitress came to take their orders shortly after, but as soon as she was gone again, Florentine's smile fell and she looked back out over the Yacht Club.
"You shouldn't have told me, papa, you should've asked me about my opinion on it and then I would've told you that I didn't want you to throw out Theo's stuff. i don't care about the few things left in my room, but Theo's stuff... you don't even know what it meant to me", Florentine stopped herself as her eyes started to water. In one swift movement, the girl picked up her half empty glass and gulped the rest of the alcohol down to stop herself from letting the tears spill.
It pained Bastién to see his daughter like this and it killed him to be part of the reason for it. After losing his son, the man swore to take care of his family, but he failed. Not only did Florentine distance herself, but Evelyn did too. The married couple hadn't been seeing eye to eye for a while, but they were always so sure they'd work everything out. It seemed as if not everything could be fixed.
