Max was fast asleep. Watching TV all night can do that to a 19-year-old girl like her. A long blanket she found inside Mike's closet was dawned over her for comfort. But as soon as the front door unlocked, Max woke up. Upon hearing the sound of Mike stepping into his home. "Hey." She said, stretching out her limbs, trying to wake herself up before she had to leave. Her morning voice was still noticeable to Mike but he didn't mind.
"Hey, Max." Mike replied, his mind still grappling over the events of what happened last night. After hanging up his coat, he heads toward the recliner without casting a glance at Max. Seating himself, he remains absorbed in his thoughts, while Max maintains a steady gaze on him.
"So, how'd it go?" Max coaxed, her eyes dreamily looking at the man in the room. He turns towards her, acknowledging her for the first time. "Uh..." He said, trying to form the pieces as he's asked the question. "...it was interesting."
"I should probably get out of here." Max rises from the couch, grabbing her phone left on the table. "Hey." Mike interjects. "By the way, I-I do intend on-on paying you, eventually."
"It's okay." She smiled, thinking about how thoughtful that was, but that wasn't the reason why she was taking this job with no pay to begin with. "I know where you live." She joked. Mike smirked at that response as she made her way towards the door.
Gently opening the door to Abby's room, Mike sees she's sound asleep, clutching a stuffed bear. Mike strives not to disturb her and settles onto her bed, silently watching over her. He gently pushes a strand of hair away from her face as she continues to sleep through the early morning light. Sitting there, smiling, he reminisces about the time before his little brother went missing, how his family was something you could only see on those early '90s television shows; the perfect family.
At the same time as this occurred, another group of people close to Mike sat down at the town's famous restaurant and coffee pit stop; Sparky's. Max stares out the window, wishing she wasn't here, in this type of situation with these nasty people. She had to be there, it was the only way to get the money to leave her brother behind. But it was hard to betray Mike's trust like this, maybe he'll understand? She hoped so. "Hey. Welcome to Sparky's." A waiter charismatically smiles at the group in front of him as he hands out menus to each one of them. "Can I set you folks up with some appetizers?"
"Yes." Max's brother, Jeff says, grabbing one of the menus from the waiter standing in front of him. He begins to look through all the delicious breakfast options this place has. "Oh." But before he could decide on his order, Mike's aunt Jane grabs it from him and hands it back towards the annoying waiter. "We are not eating." She responds rashly, making it clear to him to leave before she makes a scene. Doug, disappointed, stares off into the distance just like yesterday morning.
"Well, that's no fun." He chuckles. "You do realize that lunch is the most important meal of the day?"
"I thought it was breakfast." Jeff chuckled, sarcastically. Thinking that this waiter had no idea what he was talking about and was just spouting nonsense on the fly. "Some people say that, but, you know, it's just a theory." The waiter, Ness, added.
"Are you being paid by the word, or could we have a minute?" Jane says, interrupting whatever this is, in the hopes of getting back on track with the conversation at hand.
"Alright." He responds, taking the rest of the menus and going back to take other customers' orders. "Thank you."
"Ah, where were we?" Jane backpedalled, "Oh," Finally clicking back to her, she takes her attention towards Max. "You were about to tell me what a miserable failure you are."
