The driveway welcomed the arrival of a 6th Generation Honda Accord, the engine's hum ceased as soon as the keys were turned.
Exiting the vehicle, Mike stood by the door, reaching into his pockets to retrieve his house keys. His gaze shifted to the entrance, where a red slip caught his attention. He ripped it off the door to get a better look, turns out it was a Delinquent Notice. He looked at it intensely. 'Another one?' He thought.
Keys jingled as he opened the door to his house; the television was on, and his sister was nowhere in sight. His eyes still on the letter as he closes the door from behind. "Hey, Max." He said to the girl on the couch. He had hired her a few months ago to babysit Abby while he goes from job to job, trying to find any source of income. She's been doing a good job so far for someone he hasn't paid yet. He's planning to, just needs a way to get money.
"Thanks for babysitting." Her eyes land back on the TV as she continues to play with her ring, putting it back on and off. Mike puts his keys on the table before he takes off his coat. "There's Stouffer's." She responds. "Should still be warm if you're hungry."
"I have to tell you, there is something magical about these rings, and you can have it within..." Says the woman on the TV as she continues to talk about the diamond-plated ring, describing the texture and how it feels on the finger. The price for the piece makes it harder to even think about getting it, but the idea makes it all worth it. "I wish someone would buy me a ring." Max said, daydreaming about the possibility of anything like that happening to her.
"Did Abby eat?" Mike asked as he made his way into the hallway.
"What do you think?" Max responded in a very sarcastic tone. Abby continues to draw at her desk, humming to the tune of a song she heard recently. Her red crayon colours the ends of the paper nicely. "Same time tomorrow?" The sound of her babysitter leaving the house doesn't stop her from completing her task at hand. "Yep." Her brother responded, but she didn't care.
Abby continues to hum, ignoring everything but her next drawing. Even ignoring her brother's presence behind her as he opens the door. "What do we got?" Mike makes his way inside, taking a peek at what his sister is drawing instead of eating like she is supposed to. "Okay."
Abby moves her drawing so Mike could see it in better detail but doesn't stop for one bit as she colours more on the lined piece of paper. Mike gets a better look at the picture and instantly recognizes the man with a green shirt standing front and centre of the drawing. "Well, that good-looking guy I recognize."
"Who are all these other punks?" He asks, his hand clearly on her chair.
"My friends." She responds. "It's not done yet." Abby grabs another crayon, trying to finish the drawing so she can have time to create more before night falls.
"Well, look, you can finish up after we eat, all right?" Mike says, making his way outside the door. Patting her chair on the way out. "Come get some food."
"I'm not hungry." Stated his sister, not even taking the time to make eye contact with Mike. Instead, she continued where she had left off.
"Abby, please, come eat." Mike insisted. Choosing to ignore him, Mike gets restless and grabs Abby's crayon to try and get her to give up and eat without another argument. "Come on. Here. Please, come."
"No!" She said, refusing to give up the crayon. "No." They continue to pull the crayon until...
"Come and..." It snaps. Mike sighs, done with all the stuff he had to deal with today. "Abs, with the day that I'm having, can you just eat some food?" He said, sitting down on her bed and removing his tie. As he says this, Abby gives him an annoyed look. A little upset over what he had just done to her drawing session.
