I get a call, she's sad, she's upset but most importantly she's my girlfriend and she needs my help right now. I answer it and I hear her cries before she speaks. "They think it's my ACL" she says, the one injury that's a plague on this team right now. "Leah, I'm so sorry" I say. "I'm finished" she cries more, "no your not, me and you are gonna work together and you will be back on the pitch in no time. I promise you, I'm not letting you give up!" I tell her
"No matter how long it's takes" I add
"They're taking me to hospital when we get back can you come with me?" She asks
"What time will you be back?" I ask
"I don't even know, like 1:30am" she cries
"Of course I'll be there le. I'll be at the training ground early, just for you" I say
I feel a slight change in tone in her voice, "thank you" she says
"Leah, I'm not letting you just give in okay. I've been there and done that and I regret it so trust me" I tell her
"I do" she says
"It's nearly half time" I tell her
"Are we winning?" She asks
"Man United just scored" I say
"Fuck" she says
"But it's only 1-0, it's not disastrous" I tell her
"Look I think I'm gonna go, the girls are starting to come in" she says
"Okay, call me whenever you need" I say
"Yeah" she saysI end the call and go upstairs, I quickly change into some tracksuit bottoms and a baggy jumper. I get in my car and drive to the local Sainsbury's. I go inside and buy all of Leah's favourite snacks. I buy some of her favourite flowers and her favourite perfume. Alongside a magazine and a sudoku book. I pay and go home, I put the flowers in a vase and wrap the magazine and sudoku book up.
It gets to 1am, I leave the house and drive to the training centre. I was only 20 minutes early, I sit in my car and scroll on TikTok. I see as the bus pulls in, everyone piles off it. I get out the car and the bitter air hits me sending chills down my body. But I don't care I just need to see her, I see Laura and Lia walk off the bus. Lia smiles at me and so does Laura they get to the side of the bus to collect their bags. I see a physio get off followed by Leah. She smiles at me and hugs me. "Thank you for coming" she says. "Leah I'd come at the drop of a heartbeat" I tell her
She's on crutches and has her full leg bandaged. I see her attempting to pick her bag up, I go over and pick it up. "I'm meant to be driving with Kelly to the hospital" she says. "You choose, I'll follow" I tell her. "I'll tell Kelly I'll meet her there" she says. "Okay"I say, I see as she walks over to Kelly and explains.
I get into my car and put Leah's bag into the back, I open the passenger door and grab Leah's crutches off her putting them in the back. She sits down and closes the door, I see as her heartbreaks. The slow breathes coming out loudly and her tears forming in her eyes. I put my hand on her thigh "I'm here for you, through it all" I tell her.
"Thank you" she says to me, she leans over and kisses me.
"Healing is hard and you have to work on it day by day, even though you'll want to hide and pretend everything is okay" I say
I put my key in the ignition and start the car. I give her my phone and she chooses some calm music. We get to the hospital I pull into an end space so Leah has as much room as possible. I grab the crutches out the back and Kelly walks over helping her out the car, I lock the car and the three of us walk inside. Kelly had already phoned up the hospital so we had someone to check Leah out immediately. She had to go for X-rays, we wait in the room and I decide to quickly go to the car, I grab some of the snacks I bought, I go back into the room. "Still no news" Kelly says. "Guess we are in for a long night" I say. "What you hiding?" Leah asks. "I bought us some snacks" I say.
I give everyone something and we all eat. "How aren't you tired?" Leah asks me as she yawns
"I guess I'm used to the late nights. Was always out partying in my teenage years" I tell her
"And I did a lot of travelling when I was eighteen" I say
"Where was your favourite place you visited?" Kelly asks me
"Probably the Maldives or Fiji" I say
"Is it true you can't get an internet connection in the Maldives?" Kelly asks
"Unfortunately it is true" I tell her
