Chapter 28

Hannah

I'm trying to find my notebook in my locker when Paget's squeak tears through my ears . It's still too early in the day to be this energetic , but then that's Paget and her energetic state is way better than her dull one .

She practically runs in my direction , holding a paper in her hands and almost shoving it to my face . I pull back a bit then look at it . It's her Maths test results , she got a B . I push her hands with the paper down and she throws her arms around me , giggling and spinning us around like crazy as everyone around watches us in a weird manner .

Paget's enthusiasm thrills me , she is like a child , impressed by small things easily . I like that about her , that juvenile innocence in her features is also engraved in her heart . The more I get to know her , the more I realize how vulnerable she actually is and the effort she puts to seem otherwise .

Her depression being one of those things , the second though was kind of a big surprise I didn't see coming until she told me about it few days after the Talent Show day when Selena gave me her warning about Paget . The later had been always fearful of me hearing her story and considering her unworthy of my friendship like many did , so only after Selena almost told me everything had she finally found the courage to inform me of a matter only her , Selena , Iker and apparently Miss Lambert since she told Kane know about

She called Paget her best friend because , unlike what I thought , Paget was closer to Selena than Iker at a certain time in their childhood before he joined their group , yet the two girls were inseparable , they shared everything and did everything together to the point their families got close as well , Paget and Selena were only children , rich and spoiled and never denied anything .

Their families couldn't deny them the proximity , and both their parents became friends for the sake of the little cute girls . But that proximity didn't serve them well . Amid that beautiful friendship , with new green buds turning to blooming flowers , a dirty mold formed eating the leaves and the petals , leaving nothing but rottenness and spoilage . Selena's father and Paget's mother took their friendship to another level by starting an affair and running away when Mrs Baldwin got pregnant and refused to give up her child . Both of them left only letters behind , apologizing for any harm their love could've caused and blah blah ...

Paget's father got ill ever since and my friend's mental health had been worsening as well from that time on , she never was able to accept that her mother simply left her behind without thinking , neither did Selena accept being a fatherless girl with a mother who resorted to alcohol in order to numb the pain of the betrayal , which is why Selena decided to cope with it by turning everyone's life to hell , especially Paget's .

Thankfully she had Iker , and he never let Selena reach her while staying in good graces with the later .

« You're the best teacher I've ever had ! » She says pulling away and squeezing my shoulders tightly as she beams up at me .

I chuckle and shake my head . « It was your doing . »

« Girl , I seriously never went past D in the damn subject and now I upgrade to a B ! Do you realize how huge is ... » She trails on her words as something behind us catches her attention . I look back to find Miss Lambert and Kane along with some other teachers , walking down the hall as the two talk between each other . I look at him , glaring and trying to wrap him in an invisible cloth to keep the eyes off him .

« People who don't get a hint ! » Paget says in a heavy sigh as she open her locker to retrieve her lip gloss .

Miss Lambert is smart but so am I , it's not that she doesn't take a hint but that she pretends not to since it works in her favor . I roll my eyes as they disappear in down the corner and slam my locker door shut causing startled gasps and squeals to erupt around me .
